I just got a VF700-CU to put on my 7900GT. My question is, I have 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. Would that do the trick in removing the old residue? Is it even safe? If so, how do I go about removing it. Just dab a lint free cloth with the alocohol and just wipe it away?

Also, I have a microfiber cloth, is that consider lint free?

I just pulled a heatsink off my old geforce 4 4400, i used 70% alcohol to clean it off, and it required quite a bit of elbow grease even after letting a cloth sit on it with alcohol on it. I havent put a new heatsink on it, but i would immagine 70% isnt much worse than the 90+% people recommend. The only difference being the higher concentration of destilled water (which if it wasnt pure water will leave deposits, whereas alcohol will have less of a chance).

Make sure you scrub it good untill it seems like the heat spreader is its original color (you can sorta see the compound filling the little tiny holes). After its clean do NOT touch the surface or the heatsink (also, clean the heatsink if it doesnt already have thermal grease on it).

Theres a few good posts floating around with some good instructions if you wanna look for them (i would but im raiding in eq right now :p)

Wow just installed this heatsink and man it dropped my temps 10 degrees. Now idling at 37 degrees.
