I am using Vista with SP2.

I had some issues earlier and had to recover but that got screwed up. So now I have 2 items in my boot menu: My regular Vista install, and a Recovered Vista Install.

I used msconfig in the boot tab to delete the other bad boot item but that doesn't fix the issue because in the general tab the selection goes to "Selective Startup". When I select "Normal Startup" the additional bad boot item shows up in the boot tab again.

How do I permanently get rid of the other boot item?

Did you check "Make all boot settings permanent" on the boot tab?
