removing old thermal paste before adding AS5

hey OC guys -

i'm going to put some Article Silver 5 thermal compound on my P4, but obviously i have to clean off the old paste. Do i just get a towel and scrape it off? Or do i get some sort of cleaning suplies to get it nice and clean?

At least 90 % isopropyl alcohol
leaves no musty after taste

Get at CVS or the like
 
I always use carb cleaner, but I know know if that leaves any residue behind. It really takes old thermal paste/pads off. After that I use 90 % isopropyl alcohol to do a final cleaning.
 
It has a higher water content.
May take alittle more doing
Don't use rubbing alcohol!
It has alot of carriers and stuff that you don't want at the microscopic level

What are you recommending is best then?
 
95 % lab stuff would be best.

But I use 91 % with a ton of Qtips
so since I use it , it is best :D

Just be careful not to mush the stuff all over the place
 
^^ Same, just make sure u don't leave Q-Tip fuzzies on it... I've almost had that happen to me b4 ;)
 
I clean mine 90& isopropyl and wipe down with coffee filters ala Mr Coffee. They are truly lint-free.
