removing IHS

I have an opty 170 and I am debating removing the IHS on it. I am going to be building a WC system using the storm block, is the risk of removing the IHS worth the extra cooling I will get? How much of a drop should I expect to see with IHS vs without IHS? For removal it is just a razor blade job correct?
 
From what I've heard getting the IHS off isn't too difficult.

Run an Xacto/razor around to outside scoring a little more each time. You don't want to jab the blade under and just start cutting as you may damage something under there.

I considered doing the same thing but was never impressed with the temperature differences enough that I was willing to risk the loss of a processor.

As if the risk of damaging something while removing it wasn't enough, the core is apparently more prone to damage when installing the waterblock and some people have cautioned against moving the rig around much after to avoid putting any kind of flex on the chip.

If you're going to do it, I'd recommend putting little foam feet around the core like swiftech provides on their NB coolers (come to think of it, my Athlon came stock with them). Kinda like little shock absorbers.
 
Thanks for the reply. Seeing as I am a gamer and will most likely be taking my system to lans and such I think I should pass on removing the IHS.
 
Chips with open cores arent that prone to damage that moving them around has extra hassle involved. I still run my AthlonXP and tote it around to lans all the time, no problems. As for putting on a block, it's not hard, just make sure you do it evenly (you should be anyways!).

But, in the end, it is your procc, and you decide if you want to risk the couple hundred you threw down for it.
 
Why don't you wait until the waterloop is installed and see what kind of temps you get with the IHS in place?
I debated removing my Opteron's spreader but so far the temps don't justify the risk.
 
No clue. Maybe a super built in rFid chip, beaming signals to my monitor, which beams it back to AMD headquarters. "Hey bob, take a look at this. This guy here, Ryan, he just voided his warrentee by putting on a Zalman CNPS 7700"

So far, I have found several things wrong with that.
1. Several grammatical errors.

3. It says nothing about overclocking. :D

Or popping off the fan and strapping on a fan duct with a delta :)
 
What about a waterblock on the cpu, and the heatsink on top of it, just so it can cool a little extra bit?

The things they don't account for :)
 
What if you bought your CPU in OEM form that comes with no heatsink? Does this mean you cannot use any heatsink on it? Damn, I better move to the north pole. :p
