Removing Dust

Take your PC outside and remove the side panel(s). Then use a bottle of compressed air and spray all the fans, heatsinks, and anywhere else that dust has built up. This will clean up your case considerably. If anything remains, you can take a slightly damp rag and clean up.

1. turn the computer off (i guess this isn't required, but i'd recommend it)
2. find an "air duster" - a can of compressed air
3. open the case up
4. blast the dust out of there!

while others might, i personally don't use a vacuum nor do i use a cloth of any sort.

I used my Dads air compressor. Worked a treat :) Dunno if you have access to one though.

Air compressor works amazingly well. But if you do have one to use be careful you set the air pressure a little lower then the setting your sibling used the day before to drive nails with.

Bent capacitors anyone?

Luckily the connections weren't damaged but scared the crap outta me anyways...and yes I am very easy to scare and yeah my brother did laugh...for most of the day in fact....bastard. :p

I have succesfully used cheap women's pantyhose as dust filters (for cases without support for them).

Simply cut out sections and stretch them over the fan (not too tight or it will still suck through, and not too loose or you'll get no air in!) then hook them onto some edge or another.

Works great if you're like me and 1) don't give a hoot how it looks 2) like things to work good 3) don't have case windows, and don't want em.

Correct, another thing to watch out for with air compressors and high pressure output; I've seen it royally screw up HDD's. the air can get into the gaps between the housings and cause the platters go off kilter... causing failure...

True. I just use a wide aperture nozzle and it seems to tone down the pressure nicely. :)

used dryer sheets work well for this, too. i just tape them over the intake fans and dispose of them weekly.

Like they said above a air compressor is best if you know someone with one..
Just make sure you blow it at your hand first and make sure there is no water in the line.
This will give a good indication on how far away you need to keep the hose so you don't get too close like Andrew did. :D

do NOT do this. if there is something like a bit of rust from the tank or swarf from the air fittings (sharp bits of brass) inside the hose it could shoot out right in to your hand. and it can shoot out like a small bullet. just shoot it in to the air at first to clear the line.

Well if the tank is that old I sure wouldn't be blowing out my electronic equipment with it.
Plus if there that much water in the system to cause chunks of rust big enough to hurt your hand I think you would probably be able to see water coming out by just pointing it at the floor! Personally I never heard of anyones system being that bad that someone actually owned and that didnt belong to some company.
Also I would hope to think you know better than to put the hose right up next to your hand. Little common sense goes a long ways. :)

Hello. How would I go about removing dust from inside the case?

Take it outside and used canned air.Shop around it can be had for cheap ! I use fan filters on all of the fans in the house,as both my wife and I,used to be smokers (ducks head) I buy canned air by the case,so it works out to about 3~ bucks a can instead of 7 to 10.Having a air purifier helps as well.We have two, both with HEPA filters, both on near 24/7.

We recenlty made a concerted effort to stop smoking in the house(then all together),its made a huge difference let me tell you, with how often I need to spray out the computer cases, and the fans in them.

I use a shaving brush, works a treat and is non abrasive

If you have an old beat up dustbuster they can work well. I've also seen special computer vacuums for the job....

... sorry about that.

This is what I have been doing to my systems, as well as others', for many years without incident.

A shop vac for the big stuff, then air from my compressor for the rest.
