Umm, how the balls do I remove this thing? I just got an Arctic Freezer, but cant get the stock fan off. After lifting the lever, i tried to take a screw driver and push down in the little nook that I used to put it on, and...no dice. I couldnt get it to budge - hints?

its annoying, opent he lever then lift it up a bit and push it to the other side, then it will pop out

twist it off. be careful though not to damage the socket. sometimes the thermal paste is like a adhesive and you can't pull straight off the board, you need to declamp the thing and then shimmy it off

Hm I am having a problem "declamping" it. When you say:
lift it up a bit and push it to the other side, then it will pop out
how do you suppose i lift it as it is still clamped down? Maybe im just confused.

worst thing that can happen is you will ruin a junk chip.

i hate my 5600+

the stock heatsink isn't bad, just give it a slight CLOCKWISE twist.

I broke mine removing, be careful. Zalman 9500 for the win =]

Broke your heatsink or cpu? I already lifted the lever, I dont care if i break the heatsink, but do not want to break anything else... Are you suggesting giving it a twist while pushing down with a screw driver?

once the lever is raised you need to unhook the two metal clamps from the plastic cpu bracket. pull the metal bracket out and up. this may require you push down first a little

Yes, i realize how it is clamped on and how i need to unclamp it, i just...wasnt able to successfully get the metal brackets off. Which side should I focus on, the one with the lever or the one with the slot for a screw driver? All i was managing to do was kind of grind off some of the mounting device's plastic.

Alright, I finally managed to get the damned thing off. I just kinda slid my finger in there to move the bracket, no screw driver needed. I did then have to twist a little to get the thermal paste's seal to give way. I needed to take the f'ing mobo out to put on the new heatsink though, it was a bitch :( . Thanks for all the replies.
