Here's the deal.

I have a 2k Server that is my AD server.
I just setup a 2k3 server.

I ran adprep on the 2k server

I added the 2k3 server to the domain.
I then moved all rolls over to the 2k3 server
I made the 2k3 server the global catalog server
I setup dhcp on 2k3
I setup DNS on 2k3

No I have backed up everything on the 2k server

I'm now trying to demote the 2k server so I can remove it from the domain.
I'm doing this so I can format the 2k server and install 2k3 using the same computer name.
Well when I try to run dcpromo I get an error saying:

error1.bmp

If I open AD and check the operations manager it says "ERROR"

error2.bmp

If I connect to the 2k3 domain controller then check operations manager it shows the 2k3 server as the operations manager.

The 2k3 server has RPC running and it does not have any firewall or av running yet.

Any clue as to how to remove this domain controller?

Where is DNS running? What does the 2k box point to for DNS? Try pointing it to the other server (assuming the other DC is running DNS and you're using AD integrated DNS) and see what happens.

Also, somewhat unrelated, why 2003? Why not just jump to 2008 at this point?

Agreed....check DNS settings first. Old server..what exactly are its DNS settings? New server....what exactly are its DNS settings?

Did you do both the /domanprep and /forestprep when you did the adprep on the W2k server?. There is also an adprep on the second cd when 2k3 is R2
