Remove processor from heatsink

Short background: I recently built a PC for a friend of mine, had problems, troubleshooted, discovered bad motherboard, RMA'd the motherboard.

Now here's the issue: I now have the heatsink attached to the processor, and don't know how to get it off. Usually, when I remove a heat sink, the processor stays in the socket, and the heatsink comes off. This time, the processor came right off with the heatsink. I checked the pins, all look fine (thankfully). Now, how do I seperate the processor from the heatsink so I can put it in when the new mobo arrives? It's an AMD 64 if that matters.
 
Use a hairdryer on the heatsink. Don't direct the heat at the cpu. This will warm up the heatsink and then you can gentlely use a back and forth motion to separate the CPU from the HSF. That's what I usually do. I'm sure others can chime in here with some cool ways to separate without damaging the CPU.
 
Last night I about had a heart attack when the SAME THING happened to me. I was pulling the stock AMD HSF from my x2 4400. After a lot of sweating it finally pulled free, right along with the chip!! My heart froze! After recovering enough to take a look, whew, no pin damage. I was able to grasp the sides of the chip and twist it a little to break the seal and then just to reseat the chip. After another 30 minutes cleaning all that old goo off the chip I applied the AS5 and settled in the new Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu to take it's place. I reset the board back in the case to remount and rewire. (Also replaced the stock NB cooler with a Vantec CCB-A1C as the one on the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe sucked, that thing was HOT)

Fired it all back up and works perfect!

I guess that whole Zero Insertion Force has some drawbacks too!
 
This happens to me all the time, AS5 turns to *glue* after that 300hr burn in period. Anyways, just take the fan off the HS and use a hairdryer on the area right above the CPU contact area. Grab the side of the CPU by the green silicon wafer (be careful not to hold it by the pins) and slowly (but with moderate force) twist it from side to side. If after 5-10 minutes you still can't get it off, you may need to use something really thin and rigid (a razor or one of those really small flathead screwdrivers for watches) to *CAREFULLY* seperate the two componants about 1/2 a mm (.01inches) at each corner. Heat and twist as before, and because of the slight prying motion from earlier, it should come free.

The things seperate with alot of force too, so be careful not to drop the processor :p. This thoroughly scared the hell out of me the first time it happend to one of my machines, a good experience really :)
 
I had that problem once, and I just worked the compound of with a small, flathead screwdriver, then sort of pryed it off. Probably not the safest way, but it worked for me >_<.
 
Just game for about 30 minutes to get your cpu all nice and warm. When I game it usually runs at about 46-47c(kinda warm, I know) and then turn it off and I have about 5 minutes to get it out. Works good for me.
 
Same as Mash.

I ordered two new 3800 X2's and two new motherboard combos. They both came with the cpu and hs on the motherboard. I wanted to change the hs on one of them and same thing happened to me. The hs and cpu came off together. I used a flathead screwdriver and just used very little force and carefully got it off. Works fine and no damage. Maybe not the best way...but the quickest for me. JUST BE CAREFUL! :)
