Myself and another forum member exchanged a couple PMs and both had the same question...

An Exchange 2000 server (Mine was a 2003) was the only Exchange server.
A new Exchange 2007 box was brought in, and all the mailboxes were transferred over to the Exchange 2007 box.

The question is, how to eliminate all need for the Exchange 2000/2003 box. In regards to mail flow, AD, and anything else, how does one ensure dependency on the Exchange 2000/2003 box is eliminated?

I need to completely remove Exchange 2003 from my domain since we migrated to Microsoft Exchange Online.

Regarding the steps from this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931

Since I do not have ANY Exchange servers on site (I just want to clean up AD), do I need to do the following??
  • Replicate all public folders to another server
  • Rehome the Offline Address Book folder
  • Change the server that is responsible for generating the Offline Address List
  • Rehome the Schedule+ Free Busy folder
  • Rehome the Organization Forms folder
  • Rehome the Recipient Update Service
  • Designate another server to be the routing group master
  • Create another Site Replication Service (SRS) instance
  • Rehome connectors to another server
  • Move mailboxes to another server

I've already deleted all the mailboxes... but I want to ensure that I do this correctly. I've found different guides, but none seem to speak to just getting rid of Exchange COMPLETELY.

My guess is no you shouldn't have to do that. You can simply go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and remove Exchange from there.

OK, i've removed it via Add/Remove programs.

as for the "Microsoft Exchange System Objects" that I see in MMC, i'm assuming i can just delete the entire container since i have no Exchange on my network at all?

I would assume so. You have backups anyway so worst case you gotta restore from backups.

If you still have Exchange attributes in your AD, there is a script floating around that will clean it all up. I dont remember the script offhand, but it worked like a charm. In my case, a vm that had Exchange failed. Recreating another Exchange box was havok until I cleaned the AD out with that script and manually removing components via AD edit.

For the cleanup script, you mean here on [H] or elsewhere on the Internet?
