Removable HD Tray - Slowdown?

Ran into a confusing situation today that I haven't seen before. Have a pair of removeable SATA HD trays that have been showing very low performance. Messed around with the tray and narrowed it down to the fan in the rear (front one seems to be ok) causing at least a 50-75% slowdown in transfer speed when its plugged into the PCB of the tray enclosure. Haven't tried powering it separately yet but just wanted to see if anyone else has seen this with crappy trays? I'm assuming its an interference situation from the fan, but seems very strange.

If this is infact an issue with crappy trays, anyone have any recommendations on a decent tray that won't break the bank? :p
 
I have heard of issues before with some backplane's/trays, but I have not experienced it myself. I use SuperMicro 5in3's Not the cheapest out there I guess, but they work well for me, and I know others around here use them too.
 
Yeah, I'll probably end up biting the bullet and just buying one of those. How's the cooling on that?
 
Its a single 92mm fan. Its not quiet, but I keep it in my basement so I don't care about noise.. It provides plenty of flow accross the drives.
 
Very, very adequate. The one I'm using is in a high-flow case, and the provided fan doesn't fit, so I wired one of the case fans into it (so the alarm won't go off!) and it's keeping the drives plenty cool nonetheless. The front has a tendency to dust up every month or so, but compressed air fixes that cheaply, and it's probably better than having the inside of the case get dusty where you can't see it.
