Remotely Turn on Laptop?

i dont know how to do this, but you could use the wake-on feature in the BIOS to turn the lappy on. i have no idea how its performed or setup, but what happens is a signal is sent through the ethernet connected to the computer, and this signal tells the PC to turn on because its receiving a message through the ethernet.

maybe someone else can explain how to do this, but this is the only way that i know how to remotely turn on a lappy.
 
Wouldn't the laptop have to be in hibernation mode or something? If the laptop itself is off, that means the ethernet card is off too, and you can't send a signal.

as i said, i have no idea how it works, but i believe it works even w/ the power shut off. the problem is that this technology is pretty much outdated, but i think BIOSs still incorporate it. you can do a search, or maybe someone else knows more about this. but im pretty sure that the computer can still be off and itll work.

also keep in mind that there is no electronic device that fully shuts down. computers are still drawing power (next to nothing, of course, but its still taking power, nevertheless.). until you remove the power source, its always going to have power, so its still able to perform a 'wake-on' thing.
 
I was thinking that everything would be powered down to preserve battery life.

i say it again: as long as an electronic device is connected to a power source, it will always be drawing power.
 
My BIOS doesn't support WOL.

Is it possible to just open up my laptop, wire another switch in parallel, and hook that up to, in this case, my car's ECU?

I want the laptop to turn on when my car's ignition starts.

well you should have mentioned that this is gonna be in your car. thats a whole different story....

in the BIOS, there should be a menu called something like 'Power Options'
under power options should be something about booting when power is resumed.
as long as they feature is selected, when your lappy gets power from the inverter (im assuming) when you start your car, the lappy should automatically boot up.

it could also be an option in control panel somewhere, but i looked and didnt find anything. im pretty sure this is under the BIOS.
 
You should head over to mp3car.com and check out their forums. You will find all the information you need there. Be careful just showing up and asking though. They love their "search" emoticons.
 
My laptop is a HP pavilion ze4900 with PhoenixBIOS ver F.15

It doesn't have that power option.

antirush - I'll start looking there as well.
