remote surround speakers

As promised, I am reporting back now that I have my livingroom finished. I need remote controlled speakers for my surround setup. I figure now that the best thing is to have amplified speakers that are fed from a wireless transmitter. So, now I need a new speaker setup.

Here is the picture I promised.

Any ideas what I can get for the wall behind that couch? I don't want to run any wires. If I did then I already have a set of speakers to use. Once my camera battery charges I will include one of the back wall if that would help.

Money is not an object here, so whatever you can think of would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a basement in that house? I know you say wireless... but with the 'money is not an option' statement, I would recomend a speaker jack setup behind the TV, down under the floor, and back to the other wall. I couldn't find a reference thread so sorry if i've missed any variables you've got to count. (landlords against drilling, etc) but wired over wireless is heaven compared to headaches imo.

Edit: Nice living room btw.

Here is the back wall. I would like not to go into the basement, as I don't know how to go up the other side to get to the right point in the wall. It would have been nice to run the cables before the house was finished. The basement isn't finished, but again I don't know how I am going to run the wires if I were to take that route.

Here is the back wall of the livingroom (and thanks for the compliment on my livingroom btw) Amplified speakers would be perfect, along with those transmitters. Something battery operated would be perfect.

I can run wiring covers up the wall if need be. I don't mind doing that if I have to. I don't know if that helps.

it wouldn't be hard.. drill down not up.. and do a knock test with somone else to see where you will pop out.. at worse you will only have to drill 2 holes (one like under your couch and one behind the tv) then run your wires out from under the couch and to teh speakers on stands

do you really want them on teh wall? or will stands work for you?

I never even thought about stands.. The only problem is that it is one more thing to trip over and the walkway behind the couch isn't really that wide. I can see them getting in the way, although I can do some looking into it and mull it over. It would be a shame to drill into the carpet though.

which is why I said under the couch and the stands could be on the sides of the couch.. doesn't have to be behind.. and if you do hanging you gotta find studs, drill holes in your walls.. and one each for a speaker the way I suggest says 2 holes in the floor (out of sight) and run both cables through the hole and you should be all groovy but that's what I would do.. not mention most speaker guides say have your speakers at about head level maybe a lil higher. or depending on how partial you are to the couch itself you could mount the speakers directly to the couch but I doubt your gonna do that

I really hate to keep pushing the wired route but the audio purist in me has issues with wireless. If money is no object I think it is in your best interest to just pay someone to do the job. Running wires through a basement is about a 1 or 2 on a scale of 1-10 for difficulty, so it shouldn't cost much. Honestly, if you're even half way handy it's super easy to drill a hole through the floor into the basement (at an angle through one side of your walls drywall) then run the wires up with some fish tape and to the speaker mounts. Just use a decent gauge of wire since it will be a long run.

New homes rarely have horizontal bracing between studs, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, maybe I can look into the stands and speakers at a hifi shop. I guess I could get the matching satellites for my monitors and put them up on stands. Now I will have to find another amplifier. I only have three, and they are already being used (one for each speaker, including the center channel). That's why amplified satellites would have been nice, for all the work they are going to do.

Can you please clarify what you mean when you say another amplifier?
It seems I don't fully understand your audio setup.

I was under the impression you had just a single amp with 5.1 outs or something... that would power satellites just fine if you just drop a speaker wire under the floor, hence my recomendation of the idea.

I have the following for my current setup:

Yamaha TX550 tuner
Rotel RSP-960AX Surround Processor
Rotel RCD-965BX CD player
Rotel RB-960BX Power amplifier bridged mono - Left channel
Rotel RB-960BX Power amplifier bridged mono - Right channel
Rotel RB-970BX Power amplifier bridged mono - Center channel
Paradigm Reference Studio 100 v.2 monitors
Yamaha NS-C70 Center channel
Yamaha YST-SW150 Powered sub
Audio Research AR-230 Satellites

Then of course is all the special cabling to biwire the speakers, the special interconnects, etc. The gear is getting old now, but it still sounds good. I really don't want to go to a new receiver or something, as there are no receivers on the market that I like apart from the Nakamichi, and the local Nak dealer closed down years ago.

Hopefully that will help everyone.

No wonder you said price is not an option ;) That's a nice audio setup you've got, for sure.

I'm not aware of any options that will fit your needs for wireless, however I am far from an authority on audio equipment. If I were in your shoes I would probably just be going the wired route, either with some stands, or if your room will be setup this way for some time, a bracket mounted to the ceiling. While this might be a bit costly to have installed and running wired , it would probably be the best compliment to your current setup I can think of.

I'll do some searching for hifi wireless stuff and let you know if I dig anything up.

Edit, found something:
Maybe these http://www.shoptronics.com/adacaw90wihi.html will solve some of your woes.
might take a bit of work finding acceptable power sources near where you want each speaker. but that may be a start for a wireless option.

That's it!!! That's exactly what I was looking for. The wattage is a little lower than I had hoped for (but what can you expect out of 8 C cell batteries, like, really), but that is precisely the solution I was hoping to find. Nice job! tyvm.

Thanks for the compliments on the system, by the way. If you're interested in stuff like this as I am, I use Chord Carnival bi-wire speaker cables and Chord Chameleon, Aperture, Esoteric Audio and MusicLink Transparent interconnects.

oh man I would be ashamed to pair those with your current setup... heh but that's me

I must say, with your total interest in the audio and high end components i'm surprised that this is the solution of your choice as well, though it does seem a pretty good temporary solution. Not that I have any room to talk... I'm using my laptop speakers and an old Aiwa mini system right now... Anywho, glad to be of assistance, that seemed the best set of wireless speakers I could find quickly at least. I think beryldynamics (sp?) has some wireless options too as their website came up on the list while googling, and they have high quality stuff... so you may consider looking deeper into their produts as well.

Edit: found another set by acoustic research that seems competitive.

firefox didnt wanna display the page correctly, so you might try IE. I didn't. Linkage

Others have said it, but I'll say it again.

- Forget about wireless speakers. They're not there yet.

- Find (wireable) surround speakers that work for you and your space.

- Hire somebody to run some wires (in-wall ) and mount your new rear speakers.

- Enjoy the clean look and sound of your new surround rig.

Honestly, you don't seem to have a crappy rig, so there's no reason to use a crappy (wireless) interconnect.

I was excited because my processor filters out anything but midrange frequencies for the rear speakers. I can't remember off the top of my head what the frequency range is. It's been a long time since I looked at the manual. In fact, I don't even know where it is since I have moved.

Anyways... you don't really need a high end speaker with that scenario. That doesn't mean, however, that I won't like the idea of finding anything that is higher end. Wiring is my last resort. I will take a look at that other website.

The problem isn't the wireless tech, how else would performers be able to use wireless mic's etc? There have got to be some wireless products somewhere that will give his current setup a run for his money, especialy when coupled with the lack of power interference from any source when using batteries on a wireless device, theoretically ought to be almost optimal sound.... There just doesn't seem to be a product that meets this and is still at a price point where a company can sell enough of em to make it worth their while...

All wired vs wireless arguments aside, Let us know what you decide, and how they work!

I'm not a big fan of wireless stuff - I ran sound for a show where all the people on stage had wireless mics, for a total of 7 wireless mics. Out of 7 mics and 6 performances, we had about 7 or 8 instances where the mics just did not work and they had to stand close enough to the stationary stage mics. That's not a good performance ratio, considering we changed to new batteries every performance and these were not cheap mics.

Maybe if there was a way to send digital audio rather than analog it'd be worth it, but for now it's so cheap to run wires that it's not worth the hassle. It would definitely be cool to see a wireless setup like this, but I think there'd be too much degradation of the signal to be workable.

BTW, what do you mean about "my processor filters out anything but midrange frequencies for the rear speakers"? It sounds theoretically good, but I'd think any decent 5.1 reciever would pretty much have to do that...

The surround processor filters out anything over 4 or 7k and all bass frequencies. It just sends a midrange signal to the surround speakers. Don't forget, my gear is 10 years old now for the most part. *sigh*. It is only Dolby Pro Logic and not 5.1. What I have was amongst the most advanced you could buy for the time (the processor cost me almost $1000). Now it is severely outdated, but I like it because it still works for what I want it to do. I only watch the occasional movie, so it isn't a really big deal for me.
