Remote Support Software....open source out there?

fine one that can allow boot into safemode and ill swap. till then all these products cant compete with Logmein Rescue. 800 a seat isn't all that bad.
 
Bump for starting a list in the opening post....since more and more options are coming out all the time, it's healthy and informative to keep updating this thread.

I tested Bomgar, we were close to buying but it honestly didn't offer anything that LMI Rescue/LMI Free didn't./
 
At the moment I use TightVNC as it has several features that I require that I have difficulty finding -

- runs as a service, so full logon/account switching
- works with directx/direct3d application, yes I can actually "play" games over remote (albeit very choppy) But this very useful for certain MMOs.
- free and easy to setup

I'm wondering if there is any alternatives? May consider paying if it is better.

We are talking more about apps that don't need holes put in the end users firewall. They run an app(web based or exe) and hit a button and we can log into them. No installing on the end user desktop.

Sorry I read the title wrong, I thought it was a generalized thread about remote desktop software. I currently only use it over a line network for this purpose.
 
i can vouch for teamviewer ......nice setup and easy to use.

tightvnc

is another one might want to check out if it hasnt been mentioned already.
 
Its free to use for now. No account required either. Super duper easy to connect and start sharing.

Also -- wasn't slow at all for me.

Yup it is #3 in the list top of this thread. One of the earlier ones that I found back when I started the thread.
But keep the contributions going...it's always good to maintain the list with new and current products..and input from the community is what helps the list be most effective.

Ooof I should read at least the first post more often! Well good though, its a good tool especially when you have nothing else to use at the time.

Might I also add that TeamViewer amd UVNC happen to be my two favorite remote software.
 
Which ones are working best for rebooting into safe mode?

Id like to drop rescue if possible but rescue seems to get onti safe mode the best.
 
LogMeIn Ignition can do reboot into safe mode. It's under the properties when you connect to the computer.
 
Ignition and rescue are about the same but was hoping to find a free one that works the same
 
I use UltraVNC for open-source lightweight remote work, and I prefer LANDesk as the megabucks commercial real deal. Bomgar sucks hard.
 
looks like i just used Teamviewer for the last time today. It said I needed to upgrade to the latest version to connect to the other person and it only let me on for a few minutes and then kicked me off saying I couldn't log back in for 15 minutes. Paid version is $749 I think, not really something I want to spend to support my mother in law :rolleyes:

Join.Me works for free without having to install anything before hand. Otherwise, LogMeIn Free does the trick if you can get out there to install it first. :D

what don't you like about bomgar?
we use it so we can have unattended access to computers mostly.
there are some thinks i would like to change in the "representative console" and just with how it is organized. but it does the job pretty well.

i will be honest though.. i was using UVNC Single Click for most people for a long time because it required 3 clicks on their end and i was in, and it is free. but of course it didn't work so well once the "aero graphics" came along..
 
So we are thinking of not renewing rescue. To save me some trial and error which seems like the bestbreplacement. Need the cloent to be able to run a program then connect to us. Need 2 or 3 user to use it so...
 
^^ I know people are bashing it, but Bomgar does the trick well.
you point a subdomain to it. support.domain.com
tell your users to go to it and click on your name. then they either hit run twice, or save then run. its a few clicks and you have control.

you can put unattended clients on it all day. i just "deployed" the unattended client via email to 20 people. they click the link and I have access to their computers. only a few people managed to screw it up. it saved me from having to install the client on about 17 computers..

you can keep adding "representatives to it" and open it up so multiple people can view the same computer, etc..

it is setup weird and doesn't make a lot of sense at first, but they have great tech support, I call and a real person answers and usually starts helping me, or maybe I wait on hold for 5 minutes tops..
 
I don't think I've seen this in the thread yet, but I use Mikogo (www.mikogo.com) ... not single-click by any means, but works pretty well for my purposes.
