I have been using remote potato for a while... I have it working, but I never got it working good. It frequently freezes the video on the remote computer. I have to exit the browser and start it over to get it working again. It will do this over the internet (often--8+ time/hour show) and sometimes even on Local Network.

The forums at the main remote potato site have been closed, so I can not ask there. I am hoping someone here might be able to help.

My computer has an Intel I5-- second generation with 6-gig ram. 64-bit Windows Home Professional. Using a Ceton tuner card with cable card

Verizon Fios--- Ping 10-15 and 25mBits

Connect with router using Wireless N 5G Excellent signal, no interference.

I have tried forwarding the ports with Remote potato's defaults, I am now trying the following

Please comment if I have the numbers (settings) wrong.

Not sure if the port numbers should be set for Destination side or Source side or both.
Currently I have the source port setting as ANY and the "Forward to Port" set as "Same as incoming" with the Destination port(s) being the one recommended by remote potato

Current settings

Device: 192.168.1.18
Ports forwarded: DESTINATION Ports 80 TCP Any 80
All Broadband Devices
Active

Device: 192.168.1.18
Ports forwarded: DESTINATION Ports 81-83 UDP Any 81-83
All Broadband Devices
Active

I think my hardware should be plenty fast to stream. I can not figure out why I am having so many problems...I is painful to watch. I can send the actual ERROR reported from Remote Potato--there are a few different ones and/or my log file if someone can help.

I will update it with the error when I get back to streaming.

Also, I have un-installed and re-installed Remote potato a few times.

It happens streaming over the internet on different computers using different internet providers.

using windows essential for security (recommended by Ceton)

If someone wants to Private message---I will send you my contact information.

Thanks everyone...

Is there any reason why you are not using the default ports of 9080, 9081-9083. You don't necessarily have to use these specific ports, but it's highly recommended to forward xxxx digit port numbers for Remote Potato.

I was using the default ports up until today.... I changed them to 80 because I wanted to see if a different port might work better....

When Remote Potato was first being developed, they use to default to 80. I am willing to try anything to get it to work right.

I am out of things to try.

A lot of ISP's block port 80 to prevent you from running webservers. Don't put apps on 80, move it to another # and properly forward it in your router.

If you still have issues, you may want to check a support forum for remote potato if one exists--I don't use it myself.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Port 80 is not blocked for me... and I can stream using the current settings. Actually it is working a little better today---but I do not think it has anything to do with using Port 80. It has freezed about 4x/hour.

The Forum for Remote Potato is open to READ, but it is not allowing for any new Posts. They use to have people who could help review your log file to help. BUT... I think it was the developer doing 99% of the problem solving and he no longer has the time to do it so he closed the forum, making it Read Only.

This is the Error I sometimes get while streaming--- Usually it just freezes.

Video Ended
An error meant that the show could not be streamed: 3050 Error retrieving segment: Segment could not be downloaded: [HttpWebRequest_WebException_RemoteServer]
Arguments: NotFound
Debugging resource strings are unavailable. Often the key and arguments provide sufficient information to diagnose the problem. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?link...&Key=HttpWebRequest_WebException_RemoteServer.

My Log on the Streaming computer shows a recurring error (at times) that says

" Exception Details: [IO.PathTooLong] "

I googled it, but did not find anything that helped me.

Someone said he installed the Streaming Pack 2.0 and thought it might have helped. But nothing I read about the Pack suggest it will improve streaming--other than improve compatibility for some codecs

I am hoping some Remote Potato Guru will stumble across this post...

I know I have my Port Forwarding working....since it streams. Does anyone know if forwarding more pots might help? Example:

Ports forwarded: DESTINATION Ports 80 TCP Any 80
Ports forwarded: DESTINATION Ports 81-85 UDP Any 81-85

ALSO... Can someone comment if I have the TCP and UDP setting correct? I do not really know what they mean. and do I have the "ANY" correct?

It IS working... Just trying to get it to work better--No Freezing

Thanks for Responding with your thoughts and ideas.

Well, it is either the program, your NIC, LAN, or ISP. Unfortunately the most likely culprit is probably the program itself, especially if you are saying it has been effectively discontinued. I can't really help troubleshoot it and your best bet may be to find a way to contact the author and rely on his good graces to help.

If nobody with Remote Potato experience pipes up, you can try the HTPC forum at AVSForum. Good luck!
