Purely a thread to see what everyone is using, as I'm looking for a new program myself.

Right now I'm using a copy of Win2k3 to host a website. The server is resting comfortably behind a linksys router (I didn't say it was a professional website) and working fine. At the moment, I've been transfering files to it remotely over a terminal services client configuration. I'd like a setup where I could simply send the files without having to log into the machine itself, so I could just tell dreamweaver the information and have it simply upload to the machine. I'd use the IIS FTP site built into the server, but it doesn't seem to want to work properly for me (425 Can't Open Data Connection) likely due to two NAT firewalls on either end, even if I throw them on the DMZ. (which is just as well for me due to it's insecurities) So I wondered, "What do the guys on Hard Forum recommend?"

So what are you using? VPN?

I run the filezilla FTP server on my 2k3 box because I have an extreme dislike for IIS.

As long as you have NAT setup on the server end (on the linksys, in your case) you should have no problems connecting to it via FTP and putting your files on there. If you wanna try something more adventurous, you could try using rsync on windows or something like that too...

where is the computer with dreamweaver? last I checked it could save copies of all your work on another computer on the same network

as far as the FTP, what are you using for a client? Its probley using a passive connection wich requires ports above 1024 (not just 20,21) If you want to test connectivity of your FTP server in IIS do it from the server it self, just open a command prompt and see if you can connect to it.

I use IIS on 2k3 as well for web and FTP server. I use dreamwaver on another puter on my network. I used to have my home directory for dreamweaver set to my other computer, but stopped due to the fact I wanted a backup copy of everything just in case. So now I keep a mounted drive on my other dreamweaver computer thats actually my web directory on my server, when I want to update my site, i just drag my web site directory on my dreamweaver computer over the drive icon for my server and drop it.. update done ^^ (the same thing could be done over a vpn or somethnig if your donig this remotely. in fact it would not be hard to set up that way if you have a domain set up seeing how you already have 2k3)

My first choice is a VPN. Second would be FileZilla server using secure FTP. I never use FTP that requires credentials without it being secure, unless I am forced.

Sleepy We, the laptop is with me in another city. I have an apartment near my campus, and work on the website both at the apartment and on campus. The server is back at my house.

I'll give Firezilla a shot if I can't find a VPN I like.
