Remote file shares

Ok I have run into a little problem. I have two remote sites one in NYC and one in MN. I wanted to set up a single file share(that resides on both servers) that users at both sites would use. To keep down on traffic over the mpls. Problem is keeping all files current and only let one person edit them at a time. I tested DFS and it works great for replicating files between the two sites, but does not support file checkout or merging. So if someone in MN opens a file that is being updated in nyc it will not show that change and mess's up the file all together. Does anyone know of server app or a way to make it possible to have the two shares linked, replicated, and current?

I thought about just getting a bigger pipe between the two site and just have one share, just checking if there is a way to do this.

This sounds like a perfect use for DFS. I know you've already set up DFS...but you may want to tweak it out.

Also, make sure both servers are using Win2003 R2. R2 had major improvements to DFS.
