I'm currently planning on setting up a headless XP workstation for various Windows tools I need to use for school. I've set up a test install on an old machine of mine and it seems to be working out really well. However I'm wondering if there is anyway I can run the machine without a video card in it. I know the BIOS may require it, but I'm curious if the XP install would be able to display over the network without it. I was considering maybe even a VM display driver on the physical machine might do the trick. Google searches haven't really been of much help. Any insight would be appreciated.

The computer isn't going to POST without a graphics card of some kind, why do you want to run it like that? Without the system posting, you're not going to be able to do anything with any drivers to make this work.

Hell, I even have a Windows 7 VM running on my iMac using Vmware Fusion that I RDP into for exactly the same reason you need one. Essentially the iMac its headless because I never interact with that VM from the iMac directly, only though RDP.
 
Unfortunately that won't do in my case. Having a physical machine is advantageous for me for several reasons, which include access to physical USB ports(VM drivers don't always play nice with certain types of USB devices), and not loading up my Mac with tasks that can take a long time to complete. The time and power required to run the hardware synthesis tools I use would tend to tie up my MBP, not to mention making it too hot to handle.

This is 100%, entirely untrue. You may (obviously) need a graphics card to install XP, but once it is setup and on the network, you can pull it out and never use it again. Computer will POST fine without a graphics card.

Second This statement.

I have had several XP systems running with no graphics card or keyboard.

Once installed, just set the BIOS to never halt on errors and the system will boot right up.
 
Seriously? not that I've tried often, but I know I've seen systems not post without video output, although most of my experience is with Dells.

different systems are different.

I run an old desktop with only a power cable and network cable plugged in and although it beeps like crazy when it boots it works fine (runs linux for reference)
