Remote control with a Cell phone???

My cell phone has infrared, and I have the capability to run java programs on the phone. Is it to far fetched that a it might be possible to have a program on the phone that could act as a remote for a TV?
 
i don't think it would be powerfull enought, most of the time you have to have the ir's close together with computer equipment, might include phones to

Yes, but you could always mod the phone with a Ir LED with more output...or put some kinda of doohickey physically on the phone that amplifies the phones output

That would be a [H]ard mod...!!!

it would be nice, but i don't think it pratical, but if you want to i would like to see it work

why would a higher output ir LED take any more juice than the same ones used in contemporary remote controls? they last along time with just a few AA's.

Sure, your cell phone will use juice just being on...but I guess I assuming the point of this mod is "for the hell of it" as opposed to "i need to replace my broken remote control with a cell phone"

the really hard part would be figuring out to control the pulses of the LED to simulate a real remove control...i have no idea how to begin even figuring this part out

does the phone come with a technical reference manual that tells you how to access the Ir LED?
 
it might be easier to mod your phone into your remote control, lol, that would look kinda funny
