Remote connections, how to set up.

I really would like to be able to access one of my home computers when i am away on trips and be able to download files from home. Is there any way to connect to my computer away from home. I have comcast cable and I have a firewall router. The computer I would like to connect to is running win2kpro but if that wont work I can buy winxp pro if necessary.
