Good morning,
I've tried chasing down a solution for this for awhile, gave up for a bit, and now thought I'd ask you guys if you might know. There's a tl;dr at the bottom if you want that instead
So, I'm running Windows 8.1 (soon-to-be 10) on an ASUS Sabertooth mobo. I have successfully been able to remote wake my desktop from *outside* the network (yes, some may say it's unsafe, I know) using an Android app to send a magic packet to my router, which then forwards it to my desktop. Whenever it's in sleep S3 mode, it'll wake no problem. I'm pursuing taking this another step further by allowing me to boot from shutdown state.
Now, for those who have this board know that there are two fans you can set to leave running for up to 10 minutes past shutdown. I have this setting enabled. If I shut down my PC, and the fans are still running, it will boot up from a magic packet exactly as it would from S3 state. Once I'm outside that 10-minute window, the desktop no longer responds to the magic packets coming in. It looks to me like there's no power to the network card after the board fully powers down after this "cool-down" state. But my network card still must be getting power, since it's still lit up after 10 minutes.
I've tried both the built-in Intel Gigabit ethernet adapter as well as an Intel CT Desktop Ethernet adapter. I bought the latter since it was advertised as having remote boot capability. However, no matter how I configure it, it doesn't seem to behave any differently from the integrated adapter. I've tried changing various BIOS settings (which I can provide in detail later, when at home) to get the board to keep the adapter awake when shut down, but I might be missing something in there, or even in Device Manager...
tl;dr: I want to remote boot my desktop using a Sabertooth Z77 motherboard. Is it possible? If so...what might I be missing?
Thanks for reading.
