Remote Assistance help please...

I've tried to set RA with my uncle - get him to send me the invitation file and tell me the password, well send it over. I asked him to keep the RA window open when it's waitning to connect which he did do.

So when I tried to connect to him nothing happened...

I tried from a laptop with Vista, he has a laptop with W7.

I made an invitation on my W7 desktop and sent it to the Vista laptop, typed the password in and it worked. I trued to connect to my uncle with and without a firewall on both ends - me and him, but had no luck.

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

(both laptops have legit OSes and internet connectivity is fine - we were on Skype during the whole time)

Thanks.

is he behind a router? RA/RDP port forwared properly on his end?

might be easier to just use TeamViewer

His knowledge of computers is quite basic, so getting into port setup is a no-no. I'm not sure if he has a router or not - could just be connected to the wall. Will find out.

TeamViewer you say? Is it only in English? he is Russian and adding English would set off a whole different can on worms.

it might just have to cut it, but I'm puzzled as to why we can not connect.

find out if he's on a wireless connection?

I don't believe TeamViewer has additional languages, but I've never checked...

but it almost sounds like he's using a wireless connection to a router; in which case, RDP/remote assistance would not work without port forwarding.

I see. I think he is using a cable, but will need to confirm. If it's a matter of ports I'm screwed as I will have real hard time explaining how to check ports on a Russian OS as all the names can be/are different.

Thanks for mentioning TV - might give it ago after all as the installation and start-up are fairly straight forward.

you don't even need to install TV ;)

when you run the exe, it'll ask if you want to install or just run it. Something along those lines, anyway. The installation is not necessary.

atleast, in the version I have used, it would ask.

yeah you are right - it does give the option of just running it.

Actually I will try to make a few SSs and hopefully that will help.

.

Yes...www.teamviewer.com
Drop down window in the upper right corner to change languages, pyccknn is one of them
Why deal with firewalls and ports and IP addresses...make it easy on your self..a few clicks and running a tiny active X program in your browser and reading the ID of the session..and you're in.

Thank you very much guys for bringing up TeamViewer! We managed to install it and now I can remote into his computer! Too bad the connection keeps disappearing every now and then.
