Remote access to a small file server?

If I were to build a server, would there be a way to remotely access my files on the server from my laptop if I were to go to a library to do some of my school work?

I'm thinking of building a server so all my files can be stored on the server, then backed up on an external hard drive. I wouldn't need something crazy like 4tb's. The most I would need would be 500gb-750gb. I just need something to store my files and maybe my music. Would I have to use teamviewer or something?

I should mention that I go to my grandfathers house which is on a farm. He doesn't have highspeed, just dialup. Would I be able to access the files there as well?

If you're only looking at 500 to 750, you may want to just consider a small WD external HDD. I just bought a 500GB for myself and one for my wife. Works great for keeping our music files (which is extensive and doesn't fit on our laptop drives) as well as providng a place for backups to occur. Dialup to access almost any file greater than 5MB will be painful. Don't know how painful as it's been a long time since I've actually been on dialup.

This is the external WD HDD that I bought my wife. I got a black one (they come in a variety of colors). They are very small and will take up very little room in your laptop bag. My wife loves her's for the size and capacity.

I would just look at an external hard drive as the user above mentioned, it would b much cheaper and effective than pushing a server on the internet.

If you do still want to go the internet route, then get an ftp program/or/hamachi, and install logmein.com

or WHS does remote access very easy....

i also saw some external drive/nas that boasted remote access also...

ill post a link when i find it..
