That card was my dream when it was out I never got to buy it though :(

The box (can´t say the card) looked a lot better than the ones today. I don´t get why ATI switched from that cool marketing scheme to the one they use today with that Tomb Raider wannabe.

Btw the card I remember wasn´t sold by any specific manufacturer. It was just ATI. I never understood that.

These are all basic questions but after my GeForce 4 I just stopped reading and started again some months ago already with the GeForce 9800X2 out, so I really missed out on a lot.

By Tomb Raider wannabe I take it you are referring to Ruby? One major advantage she has over the old marketing is that she makes for much more interesting demo than a static gargoyle mounted to a disk does ;)

ATI used to make their own cards, hence why it was just ATI. .There were still other manufacturers back then, like Sapphire. Now ATI just makes the GPU and doesn't do their own boards.
 
I still have my ATI 128MB 9600XT card and still play CS:S on it every 6 months or so just to get some use out of it... but I remember wanting the 9800Pro at the time but it wa sjust way too much money so I settled for a $189 9600XT which came to $119 after MIR
 
ATI does still produce their own boards and cards. They are just hard to find.
 
Some of ATIs partners really have a thing for cheezy artwork.. Some of the boxes and heatsink shroud stickers are embarrasing and I would never use such a card if my case had a window. At least my 4850 just has a sapphire logo on it, no anime character or poorly drawn villain or hero from some game I never play.

I saw an ATI-branded 4850 at Futureshop about a month ago. No, I didn't snap a picture of it in anticipation that I would need to post it on [H] as proof.

Although it's ATI-branded, I think the card is actually made by Sapphire or Visiontek.
 
I have a 9800Pro in my closet. I couldn't care less about the marketing scheme.
 
I had a Sapphire 9800XT that i loved, had a sweet alien on it. Man, I'll never spend that much on a card again.
 
Oh ok this explains a lot I wish ATI would keep making their own cards like they used to. As for ruby she makes me feel like they're targeting a market of horny computer nerds. I'd rather have the gargoyle or some other gray monster.

One of the reasons I went with a Sapphire card - it didn't have stupid artwork on the card of a man/chick like the Powercolor ones

Perhaps, but Ruby does make a more impressive Demo with the curves and whatnot ;) Er, I mean, details in the face, right :D
 
remember the 9800pro??????

shit, I was still using a 9700pro until a couple of weeks ago!!!! (it died)

my friend gave me his old 9800pro, and now I'm using it. Bought the Orange Box, almost beat portal... playing HL2.... TF2 runs great....

There's a lot of life left in this card. (for me, until I upgrade sometime this year!!!)

(p4 @ 3ghz, by the way :p)

HL2 runs on anything. I can't understand people when they said they need quad cards to run TF2 - drives me crazy. Congrats on keeping the 9800s alive. The fan died on mine and it overheated - hasn't been the same since.

lol hell yeah. my 9700pro was artifacting and stuff.... I think it's cause I overclocked it a while back, and didn't have proper cooling... or something.... :p oops! lol My "new" 9800pro is great- and alive and kicking.

I had sort of a "hiatus" from all things PC... was working a lot, moved cross country some, laptop was the way of life, etc. (real life stuff)

So, when I set up my P4 system again, with my 9700pro, I was nervous I wouldn't be able to play any games. I hadn't played HL2 yet, so I bought the Orange box (best deal in the fucking world, if you ask me)

Well, I can play everything at 1280x1024, and it looks great to me!! The comments about TF2 were making me think I had to upgrade right away..... lol. Man, either people are running 3 games at once or something, or I'm crazy- all I know, is it runs great for me.

(but then again, games have always ran great for me, compared to the majority of "problem" forum posts. I think that's because you usually only hear about the "bad" on forums- not always the "good")

waiting for the nehalem to come out, be reviewed, etc.... then I'll decide whether to go LGA775 or nehalem.
