I was doing a little cleaning out of my closet (just moved back home from IL for a little while, so I figured I'd get all my old shit cleaned out for my next move in a couple months) and came across a forgotten gem from years ago - a Panaflo "Purple Orb". I had ordered it with the intent of using it for cooling my Socket A processors (it worked with a little ghetto-fabulous zip-tie fabrication), but as I migrated away from AMD it went to rest. Well, out of curiosity, I did a fit check in one of my P4 boards and found that the proportions (W/H wise) are identical to the P4 heatsink mounting frame, but about 3mm smaller in each aforementioned dimension. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could craft a mounting mechanism to attach this beauty? Or any that might currently be available that could work? I'm interested in seeing how well it works, because face it... Using a relatively old, cooler-than-hell looking RISC-intended heatsink on a P4 would just be [H]ard. Let me know your thoughts.
 
Purple? The original Panaflo Orb from Agilent(?) was just plain aluminum. I have one sitting on my desk.

Honestly, I don't think it will be nearly good enough to cool a P4. Maybe a 90nm A64...

Heh, you must not have been around for the original. The true original Panaflo Orb was the big-ass 5 pound 6" diameter behometh (exact dimensions and weight escape me, I have one in my closet that I can see, but can't quite reach yet). The Purple Orb was another variation of it, much more similar in size to the one from Agilent that you have. These were highly specialized HSF units designed for computers far, far away from the x86 camp. I'll see if I can find a way to take pictures tomorrow.

Edit: These original orbs WERE from Agilent. They were all old server surplus.

Ahhh, I must be wrong then. I wasn't aware that the originals were from Agilent as well. As far as I recollected, Agilent updated the design and released it for the P4s.

I'm hell bent on finding a practical use for that purple orb though. It's just too damned cool looking to pass up.
 
Sounds Dumb but is there anyway you could make it into a sweet looking N/B fan or even a GPU cooler or would it be to heavy? I remeber Thremal Take Making teh orbs too.

Agilent made the original ones for some server use. A bunch of them got dumped on the market by some company. Everybody snatched up all of the stock. Agilent then decided to make a new version for the consumer market. By the time they came out, they weren't all that great.

At least thats how I remembered it.

I just ran across a lot of them on eBay for $24.00. Anybody want to split some?

Aaaah, those were the days.

I had a super orb, remember those? Double stacked little bitty screamers on a rediculously huge piece of machined aluminum.

Notorious for crushing the shit out of cores.... :p
