It depends on state, but I just saw on the microcenter website and read some of the states' rules. Here in Ohio, any computer stuff $500 or less are eligible. Places like Massachusetts can have almost anything under $2500 covered. Kinda gives me buyers remorse with my current setup- I would've loved 7.5% off

I take it you have to have a business context or something other than just a W-2 to take advantage of this?

I did read earlier that the guy our president wants to hire to run the IRS is talking about axing everything "wasteful" or "fraud-prone" starting with the free Direct File program (which has nothing to do with fraud mind you). I'm sure if they get this guy in there he'll go after more than just that. Better take advantage of what's there right now because it might be gone by next year.

Not that I know of- last year, I was able to buy a Pixel 8 on eBay for around $300, and I did not pay tax on it. The phone was barely used, it was a steal! (apart from being an unlocked verizon phone, it had a locked bootloader but unlocked Cell)

Oh, I misinterpreted what was "free" here. I see, there's a period in some states where there's no tax? I think there are nine states where there is no sales tax all year long. Usually they recoup that by making the cost of living (i.e. fuel, electricity) higher.

yeah, for sure, but I think (at least, in Ohio specifically) it is to help with "back-to-school" costs. Think of it as "Back to school Sale" -- but the state government is funding it.

Tennessee had theirs last weekend. I traded in a M2 macbook air for a M4 macbook air for a cost of $350.

I never thought about posting this, but you're right. When I lived in MKE, it was cheaper to drive to Pleasant Prairie to buy any clothes and whatnot because not only did the outlet mall have deals, but the tax was also 5% less.

Florida does this for 'back to school' at certain times of the year and covered computers and accessories "with a sales price of $1500 or less when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use." Apparently they have one for hunting, fishing and camping too:

The PDFs on these pages are for companies remitting the tax, so they spell out in very good detail exactly what is covered and what is not. Really great to have when the kid at the store tells you something that's wrong. o_O
