I picked up a boatload of games in the last wave of summer sales: Batman: Arkham Knight, MGS: Phantom Pain, Assassin's Creed 4-6, Thief, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Shadows of Modor and a few others. While I'm enjoying them, I've realized something: they're all essentially the same game. Although they turn up/turn down the volume on various mechanics amongst them, they're all first or third-person overhead shooters with, cutscenes, RPG tinges and item and character customization. Even much of the level design and character customization and art design seems nearly indistinguishable between some of them e.g. MGS/Deus Ex. I'm getting really bored at this point...

Any suggestions for games that are really different, or have novel variations on gameplay i.e. not "I can customize my player's big toe with a tactical nuclear weapon"? I'm also pretty burnt out on top-down RPGs having recently finished Pillars of Eternity. Maybe a puzzle game (that my wife and I could play together) or an isometric turn-based game?

I've looked at some of the recent top-rated reviews, but I trust mostly-"bought" mainstream reviewers as far as I can throw them.

Gremlins (a boardgame on a computer...alot of RNG but the aesthetics are great and its a very good multiplayer game)
Renowned Explorers (a nice game for short bursts...a different take on 'killing' people with moods)
Thea the Awakening (the interface killed it for me but theres a very interesting game in there...I found it to be a bit tedious but its still worth checking out for something different)
Epic Adventures (early access still but looks interesting)

they all go in the 'something different' category

My wife played Thea the Awakening and liked it.

Darkest Dungeon -- Kind of a side-scrolling rogue-like
Sunless Sea -- If you don't mind reading
Rocket League
King Arthur - The Role-playing Game -- Kind of a Total War type game that is different and very good
Kerbal Space Program
ARK: Survival Evolved -- By yourself, set up a server and play with your wife (I do with mine), or play online

Firewatch (Great "walking" mystery/ sim, catch it on a sale though, its too short for $19.99)

Total War games.

The Banner Saga

Dreamfall Chronicles

The Wolf Among Us (Or other Telltale games)

Tropico (if you like city type building games, but also always wanted to be a Dictator).

Civilization V: Brave New World
Crusader Kings II
Kerbal Space Program
Rise of Nations Extended Edition
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (/w Forged Alliance Forever mod)
The Witness

Another suggestion for Sunless Sea. I was going to post it and someone else already did. It's good.

Rimworld looks awesome but I've not bought or played it yet.
