Reliability Update for Vista

Sweet! Bricked my computer. I can't boot in IDE because both my drives are SATA and require AHCI to boot or else I get a BSOD once Vista starts loading.

Love you Microsoft. Time to reformat, again.

In comparison, I saw a USB related hotfix somewhere, and when I went to install it Vista actually refused with a message stating that "this fix does not apply to your hardware" or some such similar message. It seems that if Vista doesn't think an update applies to you at all, it will just not apply it. That everyone else here could apply this one probably means that some part of it applies to everyone. Such as the load time improvements (not for everyone, it would seem).

That just means you've already installed the update. Check your update list and you'll see it's there already.

You should probably have updated all your disk controller drivers first.
And disabling all controllers that you don't REALLY need to boot Windows may be a good trick to boot it (like the JMicron controller on my board... and my brother has a Marvell raid controller on his board that's better left disabled when doing this sort of Windows install/update tasks).

Actually, it was not in the installed updates list. You think it might have been a part of another package? Some kind of "roll up" that had this USB one with some others? The KB number is not in the list, so either that or it is not already installed and Vista refuses to install it on a machine that does not have affected hardware.

Bricked = no work at all - like when you do a bad BIOS flash and your computer won't POST - it's a brick. Your computer is FAR from a brick right now.

I'm guessing you're just having problems booting into Windows. Like previous posters have mentioned, try disabling drive controllers in the BIOS, or just boot from your Vista DVD and restore to a previous restore point.

why not just rollback to a previous restore point?
 
I think this has killed my PC as well. Black screen after loading bar. Unfortunately on my laptop BIOS, i don't have the options to fix it.
 
Installed it after explorer crashed and it pooched my bootup. so I am going to either repair it using the Vista DVD or I am going to change AHCI and see if that helps.
