release and renew

weel okay, i have a computer connected to the internet threw the westellv ersalink gateway and it has interent and every thing is fine. Then i have a second computer. i have a linksys wired adapter. When i connect the card to the gateway i have no connection. i called customer supposr and we found the problem, my second computer is not receiving the right ip address. So we did the standard ipconfig release and renew, it releases but when i renew it says it cannot because this action is not a socket. it even stumped the customer support agent. So i was wondering iff any of you guys know how to renew it, please help.
 
Is it a cable connection?

If so, the second computer does not have the same MAC address as the first computer, so the connection doesn't authenticate and you see zero traffic.

If it's DSL, I have no idea. PPPoe or whatever not on that machine?
