Regretting Switch to Nvidia

Lost for words.

I've come from an ATI HD 6950 to a GTX 970 and have had nothing but problems under windows 7/10.

People rag on ATI for driver problems but my experience with Nvidia and this card are beyond abysmal.

Windows 7 & 10; do you think I can get this card to span desktop properly?
Nope. I drag a window, and instead of simply moving from one monitor to the next it wants to maximise on primary. The taskbar duplicates instead of spans. Granted the second monitor is basically a TV, but CCC in ATI did it as it should be. Just drag a window over there, and it goes.

Select actual monitor as main (1080p), secondary as TV (1360x768), span across as one desktop. Noooo... Desktop pic on Tv is 1080p, but cropped, rather than scaled. Despite difference in resolution, TV shows cropped 1080p image.

ATI desktop scaled both to fit. Windows dragged to and fro with no issue.

Disgusted. Current driver (8.1850) doesn't even uninstall properly. Perhaps windows 10 issue? w/e... Nvidia card was visibly warped to boot. (MSI) POS.

Windows 10 made changes to the desktop and how multi-monitor desktop functions. Duplicate taskbars is the default behavior. Window snapping also behaves different in Win 10 (which affects dragging from one monitor to other).

Weird. Must be a Windows 10 issue because I've had no problems with the issues described in your post on either 7 or 8.1 with a GTX 780, GTX 970, and GTX TITAN X. My two displays are a 27" 2560x1440 monitor and a 40" 1920x1080 TV.

The duplicate taskbar thing is normal, but I have not had a single problem dragging from screen to screen in Win10. Works exactly the same as Win7/8.. and my 3 monitors are all different resolution.

I never had such issues in Windows 7, 8, or 8.1. I'm only running one monitor under Windows 10 so I can't speak to that.

Really wondering why you decided to use the card when it was visibly warped. I'd have RMA'd that card in a heartbeat.

In Windows 10, if you drag a window slowly, the point at which the mouse cursor "impacts" the window edge will initiate a dock of that window to either the left/ride side of the display (or the corners), or, if dragging upward, will initiate a maximize on that window. If you hold the mouse without releasing and drag through past the dock/maximize initiation (you'll see an animated ghost of the targeted docking position), the window will move to the other display. If you just drag a window quickly from display to display, you'll never see this happen. The docking behaviors in windows 10 have been greatly expanded from what you had in Windows 7 or in Windows 8

If you don't like it, disable it by going to Settings -> System -> Multi-Tasking. There, you will find the "snap" options.

If you don't want the taskbar on all displays, or you want to modify how the taskbar's icons are displayed just right click the taskbar and go to properties. On the taskbar tab there is a section labeled "Multiple displays" with some options relating to it.

I can't speak to the scaling issue you're describing, but considering every other issue you describe is based on features/settings you're unfamiliar with, I'm going to guess it's the same sort of issue. Try tinkering with display scaling settings perhaps? :)

If the card was warped, I would never have used it. You'd definitely be in the right to get it returned/replaced somehow.

I'm surprised it's still usable since it's warped. You should've definitely RMA'ed the card.

Those all sound like Windows issues, not driver issues, and the warped card, if it's not a reference card, is MSI's fault.

Lol, sounds like all the issues he stated have been given solutions....and ones that will most likely solve his problems.

It isn't a really problem with dragging but there are some minor changes in terms of the logic for window snapping. You maybe notice it depending on how you drag (placement, speed) a window from one display to another. I noticed it and I have same sized displays. So it could be interpreted as a problem due to the different behavior.

I'm not too sure off hand what the specifics are but this poster detailed it more - http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1041821753&postcount=8

Sounds like massive USER ERROR to me.

Your issues are with Microsoft and Win10 NOT due to your graphics card of choice, genius.

I'd say it's pretty apparent that OP is just struggling with settings and drawing an inaccurate correlation between that and a recent GPU switch. There's no need to be nasty about it ;)

User error. Frustration venting - changes to something else can cause that. But, all the above are fixes for your misinterpreted problems = ) And yes, you should have RMA'd the card for any physical aberrations.

I did the exact same upgrade, 6950 to 970, and I just upgraded to 10. No issues here. Sounds like PEBKAC.

Dude might be experiencing user error with his issues but he is right in that nvidia's drivers are a clusterfuck right now. Particularly in the SLI/surround/3d surround arena. These guys have a lot of work to do. I feel like I'm beta testing this shit just like when vista came out. Very annoyed with that company...

New os release has always meant buggy drivers, especially for the rarer setups. Sli and xfire are twitchy enough, let alone 3d surround.

MS probably intentionally broke stuff in the display manager to screw over nvidia.

Nvidia has been getting a little too close to non-Microsoft platforms for awhile now. And the CEO saying that the future of gaming was Android probably ruffled some Redmond feathers.

I've had this too. It seems that Nvidia does not support true 1080p on certain TVs when in their cropped mode (because over the air programs put programming data in the cut off section) because the TVs do not properly support the hdmi signals necessary for nvidia to do this, and AMD uses work-arounds that are not standardized. The solution is to find the setting in your TV that sets the picture mode to full 1080p, in mine it is called 'full native' vs. the default (cropped) 'full' mode. If you're really unlucky like me with my JVC, you'll have to do this every time the TV is turned on or the display mode changes. /sigh.

Sounds plausible. I bet the grays were involved. How does this stuff work exactly, you guys holler conspiracy if MS software has any bug that affects a Linux supporter's stuff, then MS is forced to work extra hard to make sure they never have a bug in those OEM's products, thereby making those OEMs look better and saving them time/resources over the competition to reward those who support linux? lame.

He's right, I've used 970's and 290's. Basically, if you like to game and then turn it off and do desktop activities then either is fine. But if you like to alt+tab out of a game, open a video, open another game, surf, etc... then AMD is definitely the way to go. AMD cards/drivers handle multitasking waaaay better.

To each his own. I've had cards from both and multitasking had never been the issue in either sets of drivers. However it has been an issue with general quality. On that front, I wish AMD's drivers were on par with nvidia. They both have had bad stretches, but recently, AMD has been on bottom. For me, no doubt about it.

nVidia drivers are 3xx.xx, so there might be the reason.

I've been using nVidia since the TNT2 M64 and never an ATI/amd and never had an issue with the drivers. Never.

Interesting... In actuality that's an amazing feat of luck. As 20 years of products and not a single issue with drivers (even the early 2000's card-destroying and flaming driver bugs) is a damn near statistical impossibility. Not to mention the fact that Nvidia has admitted to flawed software releases on multiple occasions and released hotfixes and recalled drivers before in that 20+ years. In fact, nearly every GPU vendor has had major issues with software at some point in that two-decade run.

Never had a problem? damn.. Better buy a lottery ticket. Your luck is hot.

That is no excuse. They are THEIR products that they are supposed to support. Stop giving them excuses. Surround and 3D surround/SLI have always been the redheaded step children with nvidia and frankly I am sick of it. If I weren't married to $2k worth of hardware I would have ditched their asses years ago from all these issues. Once they work them out then we start all over again with another OS. It's preposterous to me that they haven't figured these technologies out now after 7 years since their release. It's also preposterous to me that people in here think that VR is anywhere near being supported by these guys when they still can't write drivers for technology that's been around for almost a decade.

Why are we discussing this when the OP is having Window problems?
