We want to deploy through group policy a change to our vista machines. We want to force a new desktop background for all users and overwrite whatever background image they have with one we specify.

What is the registry key that controls desktop background image in vista x64?

Doing a search in my registry for my wallpaper name, it appears that the path is:

HKEY_USERS\(User ID)\Control Panel\Desktop

where User ID is something like S-1-5-21-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxx-1217

(actual ID is censored)

The key is:

"WallPaper"="C:\\Windows\\Web\\Wallpaper\\chicagoskyline.bmp"

I've been wondering the same thing. I wonder if environment variable for "User Profile" works in registry entries. I think it's %USERPROFILE%, I can't remember.

Edit: Here's something you might want to look at and maybe try some of those variables. http://kennethhunt.com/archives/000933.html

It's already defined in global policy? No need to hack around with registry keys?

I didn't look. :p

He asked for the registry key location so I provided it lol

I never bothered with checking wallpaper policies in gpedit
