Is it a good idea to get refurbished kingston 512 ddr pc3200 ram from newegg.com? Its 20 bux cheeper than the new ram

NewEgg told me that everything they sell as "refurbished" came back from the manufacturer and wasn't simply checked by NewEgg. But considering how some people are careless about static electricity and how static damage isn't always obvious but accumulates, I'd be reluctant to accept used chips. Also about half of the 5-7 brand new Kingston PC2100 ValueRAMs I've bought failed MemTest86 or Gold Memory.

When you get it run memtest on it, if it craps out just send it back till you get one that works :)

I almost never have a problem with refurbed stuff, i actually have a higher return rate on new items than used.

I have a feeling that most of the returned/refurbished RAM is that which didn't overclock to the desired speed. If Newegg returns it to the manufacturer, you can bet that they ran all of the stress tests available on the RAM and recertified it to specs.

I have always purchased refurb, not used, items. Goes to gaming consoles to pc hardwares. The think is, they work better than the new stuff I purchase. I think is because the manufacturer actually tests these product personally. When they mass manufacture something, it just goes out from the factory. But if there is something wrong, the company looks at it, and sees what kind of an improvement should be made, and then ships it back out.

Correct.

When a manufacturer is producing something like on a line(or most anything really) they do batch testing. Where they take a sample of the product from a run, and test those only, if there is an acceptable pass/fail rate, then they let 'em go. If not, they have to sample more.

But...

When an item goes BACK to the manufacturer for any reason, EACH indiviual item MUST PASS inspection and testing.

I too, buy refurbed. I rarely buy used unless I have to get my hands on something that is rare or phased out of production.

Yeah, this philosophy works on every kind of hardware. I always buy my console Refurbished. I bought a Refurb Dreamcast and it still works. My friend bought 2 new ones and both of them broke down on him.

Did you guys notice that now, if you go to Gamestop, the Refurb consoles are more expensive than their used ones? Before, the refurbs were cheaper by 10-20 bucks, they caught on damnit, lol.

i know a guy that prefers refurbed stuff, becuase he knows it's been specifically tested by a technition... unlike new stuff, which only a certain % of it is glanced over by the qaulity control people.

i wouldn't go with this theory on ram so much, but as for other stuff like monitors, etc... only problem is the warranty on alot of items.
