Refurbished Laptops?

I'm currently between laptops and am trying to buy an interim computer; nothing permanent, just something that will work between now and when I finally save up enough to get a decent laptop. So I was considering buying a refurbished computer since they seem to be pretty cheap. Something like one of these:

Have you ever bought a refurbished computer/server/anything for that matter? Has it worked out for you, or does it tend to be a hassle?

I bought a refurbed "scratch'n'dent" XPS 17 from Dell outlet last December. Have had absolutely no issues with it that I didn't cause except for the digitizer cracking on me about a month after I got it. As configured it was close to $1900 brand new, I only paid $1039.

Also bout a refurbed iPad from Apple 2 or 3 years ago and haven't had a single problem with it.

I also had a good experience with the Dell Outlet about 2 yrs ago with an M11x R2. Came in excellent condition, no blemishes, all software and accessories accounted for, at a fraction of the price. Couldn't have been happier.

Yeah, I neglected to mention that the laptop didn't have a single blemish ANYWHERE.
 
I bought a Dell Latitude E6410 off Dell Outlet about two years ago. I'm super happy with the laptop and it arrived practically new (not a scratch on the thing). It does have a few sporadic issues though (on occasion it fails to wake from sleep and gets stuck in a black screen; also occasionally the cursor moves downwards if holding down the left mouse button).
 
Cool, that's what I was hoping to hear. Thank you. I'm almost surprised at the lack of refurb purchase horror stories though!:p
 
Dell Outlet...

I deal with them ALL the time. I've moved to only purchasing my monitors through them for the office, and I've moved to purchasing our notebooks through them as well.

I've never had a problem that they haven't bent over backwards to fix.

Both Refurb monitors and notebooks come looking new...if they don't they get replaced. I haven't had to send one back in years. Our recent purchases were P2412H's and U2311's...you couldn't tell they weren't new.

I will mention, if you do go to purchase a notebook from the outlet center...be patient. A notebook might be priced right, but could be gone ten minutes later. Wait for the next one. Don't overpay.

I've bought refurbs over the years without ever having a problem. The Dell stuff has always come in like-new condition.
 
I've worked with a number of developers who swear by the refurbs off of the Dell outlet site. If you have the patience to watch that site almost daily until something close to the configuration you want shows up and is the right price, it is a good way to go.

My first two laptops were reburbished HPs that I got off ubid.com, got good deals, probably 40% less than same specs new and to this day are still running like champs. The first I bought around '03, a P4 Celeron with 512MB ram and a 40GB/4200rpm drive. It is still running - nephew uses it.

I'd have no worries about buying either a refurbed HP or Dell. My only concern being if I could get the features, mostly screen size/type/resolution, processor type and ports that I would want. Drive and RAM of course is a none issue as those are the easy upgrades.
 
Had 2 refurb laptop purchases in the past.

1 dell which was impeccable even gave me a brand new hdd with the purchase.

2 hp which was doa. The experience wasn't bad at all as I got a full refund in return.
 
you can even go the used route, most of mine are used, i got burned with a new HP G62 that died on me 6 months after the warranty expired, that little sucker was 400 bucks. So i just buy used ones now for about 100 bucks each, well worth the money, if i don't use them i let them run as servers, very low power consumption and enough horse power to do most things (core 2 duo cpus :))

I've heard some things about battery issues with refurbished computers? As in they don't come with new batteries and end up with a battery life of less than 40 minutes. Has anyone had any issues like that? Or do you just make sure to buy from places that ship the refurb laptops with new batteries?

My laptop came with a battery that lasts about 5 hours. So I'm going to say if you buy from the manufacturer, then you're most likely going to get a new battery. If you buy from a third party, there's no telling what you'll get.
