refresh rates - affect performance?

I know that my LCD monitor doesn't have flicker because of the way the LCD's are always on, instead of a CRT drawing lines. So does it matter if I set it at 60hz or 75hz when I'm playing games like HL2? I know if I turn on vsync that it caps the framerate, but does it matter otherwise?

I dont exactly know how to answer your question, but what I can tell you is this: If I play UT2004 @ 85Hz, its choppy (yes VSYNC is OFF) When I put it back to 120Hz, nice and smooth. Weird, or not, somehow the refresh rates do affect performance... :)

kind of...

with vsync off, 60hz wont effect anything.

with vsync on, the maximum ingame fps will be 60, and if your system drops even to 59fps, vsync will drop it down to 30.

keep vsync off, and you will be fine.

All I know is that your refresh rate is limiting your maximum fps. So even tho your card is capable of getting 120fps but if your refresh rate is set on 85 then it'll be capped to 85, but of course you already know that.

If you think about it, how can the videocard draw faster then the (physical) rate of monitor actual output without throwing away those extra frames in between.

from what i understand those "extra" frames get blended somehow into the final output...but don't ask me how the hell it's done as i haven't become quite obsessed enough to know that yet :D

so... is 60hz worse than 85hz if I don't have a CRT and v-sync is off? Does it make any difference at all? Kinda confused... Lay it down for me, techie brothers.

I don't beleive it will affect anything, IF vsync is off.

With it on, the card will probably match the framerate to the set refresh rate, regardless of whether that refresh rate is being detected by a CRT or not.
