refresh rate

Whats the story with the horizontal and vertical refresh rates these days. It used to be just refresh rate.....whats the difference
 
that makes sense, thanks for the info. So windows only has options for verticle refresh rates naturally right?....and horizontal scan rates come naturally with whatever the verticle rate is set at?

because im getting this lcd monitor from newegg, and it used to just say refresh rate....what made them change

edit: huh..so if horizontal scan rate refers to how fast a horizontal line is drawn, then it wouldn't have anything to do with flickering would it......
 
they dont flicker because of refresh rate. The refresh rate does not operate in the same way as on a CRT which refreshes the whole image with a cathode ray gun across the screen. If you get flickering on a TFT then it might be due to response time or dithering or other factors, but not because of refresh rate (in the CRT flickering sense)
 
So what role does refresh rate play in LCD monitors? and does the refresh rate listed in display properties resemble the verticle or horizontal refresh rate?

I always thought LCD monitors were measured in ms, or response times. Obviously the lower ms would mean the faster your "refreshrate" would be. Most monitors out there now you set one variable, (60hz, 70, 75, 85, 100, 115, ect) and that would do the trick. I'm not sure however, that you can change specifics such as vertical and horizonal.
