Refresh rate question.

My LCD monitor's native resolution is 1280x1024, and at that resolution it can be run at 2 refresh rates: 60hz and 75hz.

Now, in 60hz, everything is sharp, it's all pixel-perfect. But when I run it at 75hz, everything is slightly blurred, but the framerate of everything is much smoother. The mouse cursor, and window moving/minimizing is a lot smoother,, as if there are more frames of animation to it. Why is this? I am running on a Mac Mini with OS X10.3.9., but it's the same on OS X 10.4 and Windows as well. I was wondering why.

I love the smoothness of the framerates and such, but can't stand the bluriness. Thanks in advance!
 
I would like to know the answer to this one also. I just got an LG 19" LCD today with 1280X1024 native resolution. The setup paper that came with it says it' normal setting is 60Hz but in the vid card resolution setup it will go to 72 & 75Hz, isn't a higher refresh better?
Also it didn't come with a DVI cable, the sales person told me it would cost a few hundred just for that type of cable. Is that true or was he just giving me a line?
 
Higher refresh rates are better for CRTs, which use phosphors. The illumination of phosphors decays quickly (partially by design) and thus the need to be refreshed often. The general consensus is that anything below 70Hz is unacceptable.

LCDs don't use this technology and so 60Hz is usually plenty. As far as the blurriness is concerned, this would seem to indicate that LCDs don't like a higher frequency, but I've not looked into that aspect. Maybe time for a Google.

EDIT, from NEC: Since LCD monitors do not employ phosphors, refresh rate is not a concern. Basically, the transistors in the LCD remain open or closed as needed until the image changes. This can be a point of confusion for some consumers, however, since most graphics cards still "ask for" a refresh rate setting. This is due to the analog nature of existing graphic cards (see "Inputs" section) and their support for CRT displays. While refresh rates do not apply to LCD monitors, most LCDs are set up to accept any settings from 60Hz and above.

Yeah, it's odd, because it seems as if there are actually more frames to animations, making them look smoother, like the movement of the cursor, or the "genie" effet while resizing windows, it all looks higher-frame-rate while running 75hz, but everything looks pixel-perfect-sharp while running in 60hz. I wonder why this is? I know it's not only my monitor, as I've had a lot of LCD's, and they always do this, but at different refresh rates, ie: on my 15 inch LCD monitor, 75hz runs everything sharp, but at 60hz, things look blurry.
 
I found it! It's clock/phase adjustment! I googled, found a test image that should look a certain way, set the monitor to 75hz, manually adjusted, and BOOM! Problem solved!

Lesman, thanks for the explanation. This is my first LCD, a 19" by LC and it's beautiful. The colors are bright and clear and everything is so sharp it's hard to believe, but then our old 17" NEC CRT was about 8 years old so it probably wasn't coming across very well before it finally just stopped 2 days ago. I have another question or two but I'll start a new thread.

It helped out a LOT.

If the clock/phase is correct, then there wil be NO vertical bar noise in the picture. Also, there wont be horizontal streaking/noise. Set the clock phase to whichever provides the clearest image.
 
Thanks for the link, it works with all the refresh rates on my screen/vid card so I guess I can adjust at will for the game I'm playing at the time.
