reformatting a lone hard drive?

I need to reformat my har drive, but i only have one, ive been told it can be done without two... but i don't know how. I have a bad copy of DirectX 9.0 and cant get rid of it, so i need to reformat... well thats it. any help will be...well...helpfull.
 
XP: Bootup with your XP cd, delete the partition, and format.
98/95: Boot with a Win98 boot disk and run fdisk.
