When I try reformating is there a way I can get around the "This device is already in use" or something like that error. I am really trying to start over new with my new video card.

Edit: The real error - "Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)"

This dismount does not work it then says. "Cannot lock drive. The volume is still in use."

Please help!

OK. What exactly are you trying to do? It sounds like you are trying to completely wipe the drive and then reinstall an operating system on it. Is this correct? If so, what OS are you putting back on?

For the basics, I am going to guess it's XP. And from your description, it sounds like you are trying to format the drive from within windows. Moreover, it sounds like you are trying to format the system drive from within windows. That can't be done because you will be erasing the very files that windows is using to operate. It doesn't like that much.

The best way to format ANY drive is to do it outside of the main OS environment (you will almost always be using some kind of OS, but anyway). WinXP and all Linux flavors (that I am aware of) all come with formatting utilities on the installation disks.

Windows ME and previous didn't have formattting utilities on their install disks (without digging for them) so it's easiest to pick up a boot disk with formatter, something like the Ultimate Boot Disk or something from bootdisk.com.

Yes I am trying to compltely erase WinXP from my hardrive and re-install.

I know the WinXP disc comes with a reformating tool but my computer wont boot from the cd and I have done all the bios stuff to change it.

Also another question why cant I go to safe mode whenever I hit F8 it brings the menu up but I cant go up and down with my keyboard. Its like the keyboard is off...
 
Thank you for trying to help the whole time all I had to do was plug in a PS2 keyboard for some reason a USB one doesnt work on startup.
 
Why not set this harddrive to slave, install on another computer and then format it. Then put it back in your computer and install windows on it. Works for me.
 
For future reference go into your bios and set up the usb legacy support and should be an option to enable usb keyboard support also. This will let you use your usb stuff in bios, etc if you lose your ps2 adapter.
