[Load Optimized Defaults] to fix your hdd problem... if it's related to the bios.

I did that, the hdd is still not there though, but I know its not bad so its kind of wierd, maybe it needs drivers?

THanks for the replys bro, the first boot device has Floppy under it and then the 2nd Boot Device has HDD under it and it has HDD-0 but it doesnt have anything that says auto detect.

that means you'll have to do it the same exact way that i did it on my old 386 (it didn't work cuz the drive was borked by the emp that the psu had thrown out a day earlier)

look at the hdd settings. note the acronyms by the settings. look on the hdd itself. find the numbers for each acronym... they may have a range, in which case you're gonna be doing a bit of guessing. then just fill the numbers in.

I dont know what you mean, under it I can just choose HDD-1, HDD-2, HDD-3....
 
[HDD-0] is what you want. people count 1-2-3... computers count 0-1-2... :rolleyes:
 
O i was under the impression this board was OLD OLD school. Its not that old and I dont know why ur HD didnt pick up.

Starhawk looks like he knows whats up.

In the mean time though, why dont you hook this HD as a slave onto the pc that your using now to make sure it works. While your at it, might as well format it FAT32 as well. This may help
 
hehehe... got 3 old comps in my house... so i BETTER know what i'm doing.

386 workstation (trying to revive but so far unsuccessful... it's where i'm pulling the bios stuff from)
p1 90mhz pavilion (my mom's backup, and until xmas 2004, our main household comp... i kid you not)
p1 150mhz (trying to sell in my fs/t thread for $50... haven't had any offers... ever.)

Im on my laptop right now...ummm when its starts up, it doesnt have anything for Primary Master and Pri Saleve Disk under IDE Drives....??

Also I guess its still not detecting, cause its still not working or its giving the same windows 98 error.
 
Primary Master = jumper set to "Master" on HDD, plugged into IDE cable labelled "Primary" on IDE ISA/PCI card (if it's that old) or on mobo (if it's newer than i think it is)
Primary Slave = jumper set to "Slave" on HDD, plugged into IDE cable labelled "Primary"
Secondary Master = jumper set to "Master" on HDD, plugged into IDE cable labelled "Secondary"
Secondary Slave = jumper set to "Slave" on HDD, plugged into IDE cable labelled "Secondary"

The hdd was working fine earlier, so I still think its good....

Umm I looked at the harddrive and I only see a cable connected to the power, and a cable connected from the motherboard to the hd...
 
I dont know what I did but I got the hdd and floppy working from messing around with some cords, blowing the dust off them etc!!

Naw, it was more then taking out and checking wires and shit, im sure setting bios to regular defualts and all helped... trust me im sure it just wasnt the wires.

only one thing that i got to know here... wtf does your friend want with a computer that's 6yrs old and runs an os that nobody supports?
 
Win98 support was extended and is until 2006...
They probably use it for the same reason you had! They may not have any other machines.
 
odd... i'd heard over a year ago that microsoft had dropped win98 support like a 16lb bowling ball from the 2nd floor into a kiddie pool
 
He just uses it as like a computer to get on aim and browse sites in his room, his dad bought a pretty nice computer for the whole family, but he uses there old one to mess around on.

Win98 & ME it were set to lose support, but because of huge demand for support, it was continued. Check out the support page for Windows 98 if you're interested :)

As for you CBlakeNS, did you set all devices to Automatic detection in the bios, and did you check the connections of all the cables?

Remember "red to one" (the red line of the ribbon cable) as the right way to put a data cable on a cdrom/hard drive . Make sure the red is closest to pin one in other words.

Yeah I got it working fine,

He just needs to install the drivers and all and then it will be set!
