hey all, i purchased an arctic silenver rev 3 about 1 month ago and ive noticed that the temps are kinda crappy :p leads me to believe that the core/heatsink are not making good contact
ive decided to refit the core but i am not sure what to do about the memory paste that came preapplied on the silencer. shud i leave it as it is and remount the cooler? or shud i take it off altogehter and get somea s5 on it? thanks all

well, i've decided to simply go with the same thermal paste that was on the cooler...however, now that hte backplate is off, its rather hard to remove the cooler :p i don't want to apply alot of force to it and end up screwing up the card...anyone know of a good solution?

get something made of soft plastic and lightly twist it between the cooler and the card, slowly working your way around the cooler to make sure to "dislodge" it evenly. Its not even need to "break" the seal between the cooler and the card, you just need enough working around the entire cooler to loosen it up a little.

I had the same trouble once, I used a plasict spreader for auto body repair and it worked great :)

never thought of that technique, i decided to run rthdribl for a bit (around 10-15 mins) and then quickly shut her down and removed teh card
from there, it was hard at first but it slowly got its way off
just put on the as5 and i was idling around 40C but after running rthdribl, gone back up to old idle temp of 46C. load has changed by about 5C lower and im hoping after the as5 "breaks in" i'll get some even lower temps :p

That works too :D I just like the mad dash approrach :)

Temps will definatly go down, like you said it just needs to settle.

I actually a little pissed off my my cooler, I was trying to lap it, so I took it all apart only to see that the actualy heat fins will not disconnect fron the copper base. Meaning i won't be able to pull those metal rods from it allowing me to lap the entire thing easily. DAH, but oh well, I guess im gonna have to cut the end off it so it will fit on the new 7900gtx coming with the same shitty base.
