Reference or not how to tell...serious

It's all about recognising what the reference design for each model looks like I'm afraid. If you're not sure, you can always ask.

Normally I have always been told that if it says NVIDIA or AMD on the PCB then its a great chance that the card is reference.

Any 5770 that looks like this is reference: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/ATi-Radeon-HD-5770.jpg

For instance, this XFX 5770 is reference: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4150447&cm_re=xfx_5770-_-14-150-447-_-Product

That Sapphire 5770 is not reference.

This is wrong.. All that means is that its a reference cooler.. Doesn't mean the card is one way or the other.

The correct answer is to compare the components of the board itself to the ATI/nvidia reference design & see if there identical. The coolers though don't tell you shit.

Reference will also always say Nvidia or ATI on the PCB itself. Thats another way to tell if it is reference

This is the only correct way to know if the card is a reference model. It has to have the AMD or Nvidia logo stamped on the PCB near the PCI-e connector.

By judging by the cooler, I tend to buy non reference cards because they usually run cooler than the reference models.
