Does reference coolers help a lot with the temperature in an SFF over non-reference? Thinking of getting a Powercolor HD7870. I wouldn't have hesitated but I read that this card sounds like a jet engine under load.
 
Yes, reference coolers are the way to go, otherwise the gpu will dump all the hot air right into the case which most of the time is starved for cooler air to begin with.
I think in something like and SG09 or other mATX cases it might be less of an issue but in a truely small ITX case it is a must practically.

What case are you going with?

Also, this powercolor 7950 has its fan in a weird position. I wonder about air getting trapped at the end of the card.
 
Yeah those cards aren't venting purely out the back of the case in my experience but the idea is they suck in from the front of the card and push it out the back of the case.

In my experience they just kind of vent out both ends, not as good as a more sealed unit.

Are you stuck on AMD, what are your gpu needs? 720p, 1080p, htpc?
 
Where I live, the cheapest GTX660 cost about $20 more. That's mainly the reason why I choose AMD.
It's an everyday use computer and once in a while I play a game at 1080p.
There are more sealed units?

Be aware when selecting a model, it's not about the fan or fan position, but whether the shroud is fully closed. That powercolor 7950 is open at both ends, so half the hot air comes into the case, and will likely just be sucked around the front and back into the GPU fan.
