I have this idea, for my next upgrade after CPU,
since my single 290 has to run loud to perform at its full potential and it can be annoying gaming at night sometimes, i am thinking to put another 290 and UC,UV both of them to around 850 mhz -30 mv, 57% fan speed max limit.

Do you think this is a good idea?
putting an arctic extreme 3 or 4 on that is a stupid idea for me since that is almost as much as another 290, nor am i comfortable installing that stuff, i can grab a gelid icy rev for 30 dollars but i am scared to install..

is crossfire good vs single gpu?
 
Crossfire tends to work OK especially on the 290s but is still hit or miss at times.

I think the better solution would be to sell the 290 and buy a 970 or non ref 290 if noise is your big concern. I think you'll be in the same price range as buying a used 290, maybe even less with either of these options.

How much space do you have between x16 slots on your mobo? If the cards are against each other that top card is probably going to run hotter than it does now even UC / UVd
 
If you're uncomfortable installing an extreme 3 or 4, then try getting a non reference 290 with a better cooler. Then either keep reference 290 for crossfire or sell it.

Under clocking and under volting seems retarded to me, if you're going to drop the specs of your card then just get a lesser card with better cooling like 270 or 280.

In all honesty if you can put together your own PC, installing an Extreme 3 or 4 isn't all that difficult. I know its pricey but $90 is still nearly $100 less then the cheapest 290 on ebay. They do perform great and they're very quiet. Honestly, I knew it will probably be a shit card in the loudness department, but i got such a good deal on it i couldnt pass.
~150 - 160 USD for this baby with 2 year in store replacement wty. wondering if i can just fry my card somehow and if they will replace it for me right away with a non ref ( i dont think retail stores carry ref anymore )
 
You can remove the outer shroud and zip-tie larger fans to it. It might sound like I'm joking but it really works.
 
I have my 290 undervolted by -50mv and over clocked to 1050.... I think you'd be surprised what you can do. If you only need 900-950mhz core, you could probably undervolt quite a bit! At my settings power consumption is similar to a gtx 970, and about equal in performance to a stock 970.

Has something like this been done with pics? i would like to see how much difference does it make before attempting it
 
update : i uved it to -35mv, oced to 999 mhz, and i dont go above 93 degrees while gta V or witcher 3.
fan speed is max @ 64, which is still tolerable.
 
If your card isn't a stellar OC'er, try -50mv and 950Mhz, might knock a few degrees off, or be able to drop fan speeds a bit.
