Reddit Cracking Down On Abusive Comments

Wrong, which is why Facebook and such social media sites are worth billions and billions of dollars. You're not paying for a simple stupid website, you're paying for access to the community that built a home there.

1) She didn't create anything, the community did, and she has just walked in to a very successful site trying to screw it up.
2) Organizing a mass exodus onto a new host is not easy, ask Google with their Google+ competitor.
3) There is no harassment/abusive comments problem on the site, as all threads and comments get voted on for visibility. If its not a thread or post that is popular, it won't be at the top and will fade into nothing, or in the case of comment get too many downvotes and in short order be invisible. Illegal commentary always resulted in a delete and ban anyway, so this is purely about all the anti-Pao harassment she is trying to stop.

Its just a lot easier to try and change the story and try to convince people that when SHE is being attacked its not about her, its about Reddit attacking all of womankind. So with that narrative she'll surround herself with SJWs she puts in position of power and try to change the face of Reddit.

You know nothing, John Snow.

Calm down Duc. I realize she did not build the site, but she does run it now and she has every right to make whatever change she wants to the site. I am also not suggesting it would be easy to make an alternate site, but unless she chooses to leave or is removed from her current position, I really do not see how to avoid the current policies of the site.

I never suggested changing the story or even commented on what SHE was doing, as I feel she came in and is re-making the site into something completely different than it was built to be. But the fact is she has every right to do that in her current position.

So please do not imply that I do not understand the situation. I just don't care and find it odd people with the ability to build an alternative continue to complain about things changing when they clearly have the ability to make a change.

Is there any actual proof that Ellen Pao personally instated this policy for her own benefit?/QUOTE]
Is that a question, or just a preface to a statement? If its a question, what would constitute "proof" to you, short of Ellen Pao going on youtube and saying "This is why I'm pushing this now"? That will judge whether there is a point to piling on evidence or not, such as all the popular highly upvoted threads about her and/or her husband that are deleted.

This is highly unusual for Reddit, since they are a democratically run site historically with virtually no oversight. Individual subreddits conduct constant sub-community votes to police themselves and the content they wish to discuss. That's why you can have one subreddit which is age 5+ appropriate with never a NSFW link, and another about as was pointed out watching people get burned, assassinated by ISIS, die in car crashes etc.

I'm usually on the subreddit for my favorite video games like Elite Dangerous where there's never anything NSFW and its just discussion about the game and nothing else. There has simply never been a problem with this self-policed system, except the community became ever more curious about their new CEO Pau by how she came to power, the changes she wants to make, and the deletions of discussions about her and her husband.

The era of the internet as a somewhat democratic expression of its users is over. It is all pretty much curated like most other media and by the same folks.

In the mean time Google is raising the price of admission to non-obscurity above the average person's reach.

No one has the ability to get the entire userbase of Reddit to shift to a brand new site without millions and millions of dollars.

And absolutely the community has the ability to make a change, which is why they are going so public about Pao and "shaming" her, so that with the spotlight on her the hivemind can collectively put enough pressure on Reddit to oust her and replace her with someone more reasonable. That is something that the community can more reasonably accomplish and by and large is doing, because ultimately no matter who she was friends with, she's just one person against thousands upon thousands of redditors that have been there far longer than she has.

You and the poster above you use this word, but I'm not sure either one of you know what it means. Democracy is not the same as anarchy or self-policing, and it's rather naive to use a governmental philosophy for a business approach.

The word "community" has really lost its value when a small percentage of vocal users can represent the whole. To be fair, I've always been cynical of anyone using the term "community" to define online-only interactions.

Somebody doesn't understand how reddit works. Its www.reddit.com BTW, cool site, might want to check it out some time.

Now that you're back, you probably noticed a ranking system for all threads and all topics right? See how it says 5986, 5320, 5100, etc on the top ranked threads? That means thousands of other people thought it was good and that's why you're seeing it on top. Yup, that means that being vocal means jack squat, unless tons of other people rank up your thread or comment.

So, no, a small percentage of vocal users can't represent the whole with a democratic ranking based system in which EVERYONE votes.

I don't think you understand the difference in the word's general meaning vs. the system of representative government.

Even in the system of representative government people supporting and founding them never intended to degenerate in to a majority rubber-stamped dictatorship especially when the majority's view is a perceived majority, except people who like dictatorships in general.

I don't think you understand the difference in the word's general meaning vs. the system of representative government.
Well, and no representative government can be called a democracy anyway. A democracy requires direct voting of the citizenry, but so many people have repeated that the United States is a democracy, that its confused everyone. The United States is a republic, not a democracy, since we use elected officials to make decisions on their behalf. A 14th century pirate ship by contrast was democratic, because almost everything was up to a vote, where the ship went, when they'd divide the spoils, who was captain, what share everyone got, and so forth, only giving up all leadership decisions in cases of emergency/battle to the captain.

But as was pointed out, the adjective democratic is a broader scope than the noun democracy, and implies simply that everyone has an equal vote. Since all comments and threads are voted on by the community, with everyone having an equal vote, what rises to the top and what becomes invisible is up to the community and yes that's democratic in nature.

Is that a question, or just a preface to a statement?
A question.

If its a question, what would constitute "proof" to you, short of Ellen Pao going on youtube and saying "This is why I'm pushing this now"?
I don't know. Proof is more than some loudmouth shouting on the internet, though.

Lots of web forums implement anti-bullying policies. Pretty much all of the big ones. Reddit is #27 globally, according to Alexa. #11 in the US. That's a juggernaut and there's a lot of money behind a site like this. If they figure the site isn't growing enough because users are being bullied, this is what they'll do.

That will judge whether there is a point to piling on evidence or not, such as all the popular highly upvoted threads about her and/or her husband that are deleted.
That may as well have been a Reddit employee.
If you write "Timmy's a faggot!" on Apple's forums, it will get deleted as well and I'm sure Tim Cook will never know about it.

According to that article the group owners deleted the threads.

IMO Reddit has been trying to go mainstream for a while. They have a hard time doing it obviously due to their history. They have been looking for any excuse they can. Doesn't matter when Reddit changes it's user base will be off to the next horrible place on the internet.

I don't know. Proof is more than some loudmouth shouting on the internet, though.
You've made it clear its not a question, and just a statement. Otherwise, flip it around and try to show even a single well known example of "bullying" that has occurred on the forum in the past that didn't involve:
1) Celebrities that weren't posting on the site anyway and not part of the userbase (like leaked celebrity nude photos)
2) Ellen Pao, the new CEO.

You don't think its interesting how the burden of proof is not only undefinable by you, but that its also one-sided and that you accept without a shred of evidence that Reddit had a problem with bullying of its own users because Ellen Pao says so, that there was some public request from Reddit for this without a single thread demonstrating that because Ellen Pao says so, and that it isn't just an excuse. I think its interesting anyway. ;)

No, sorry, burden of proof is on the person making the accusation, not the person questioning the accusation.

You accuse Pao of being the cause of this change--that's your assertion. The burden of proof lies on you.

As for your bullying, it's another silly argument where you ask others to do homework. But yes, reddedit has been the source of many bullies, not just 'celebrities', and it's also pretty disgusting that somehow you imply that bullying celebrities is okay.

Yeah, I'm going to have to call bullshit on that.

Pao tells you the reason for the new "anti-bully" rules, and you accept this as fact. It doesn't require any burden of proof, because its just a fact as you accept it. After all, its not like Pao has ever been known to make false statements, well except in court and possibly colluding with her husband in major fraud, and so forth.

Someone not only suggests an alternative motivation, but provides a history and background, and that's not enough "proof" for you.

Just admit that you simply like this SJW anti-bully nonsense regardless of the justification for it.

The San Fransisco Superior Court would be interested in your accusations of perjury in their courts. Would you like to give them a call?

She made four statements against her employer, all of which were unanimously declared by the court to be false. And yes her employer has countersued for damages incurred by her false allegations.

What does a mainstream Reddit even look like? The majority of the front page is inside jokes, memes, and stupid photos. Clicking on the comments section for nearly every entry reveals a whole lot of circle jerking and very one sided views where anyone who opposes the expected view gets down voted into oblivion so that everything keeps staying the same and no actual discussion happens. How does that turn mainstream when the whole site is primarily one big clique with a heathy dose of porn on the side?
