I have an older computer (2-3 years) with a 4870x2 referb. The original card was sent in under the warranty because of overheating ... the system wouldnt boot at all. The referb worked fine for months till I built a new computer and let it sit on the side, going unused.

I was going to sell the rig but on the first boot I noticed red lines. Rebooted and the lines were gone. If the lines show at all they will always be there from the boot process. I can say that because I ran the computer for 3 days straight and lines never appeared. I turned off the computer for a few hours and when I came back there were red lines again.

I have tried different monitors so I know it is not that. I have run furmark and it can handle it with no problem. I am not sure what the deal is here.

Any ideas?
 
Try reseating the card in the pcie slot. Also what are the specs of your rig? Especially make sure to note your poser supply make/model. Does your case have adequate airflow? Finally I just wanted to point out that lines during post usually hint to a failing card. Usually vram related.
 
Gotcha, I dont have the specs on hand because the computer is not at my location. I will get them for the psu.

However, I just remember one thing about the power cables. The PSU doesnt have an 8pin cable required by the video card so I had to take an adapter that converts 2x 6 pins to an 8 pin. Then, because I used up the 6 pins, I had to take another converter to take 2x 4pin connectors and change them to 1x 6pin. That said, a couple months ago I needed those converter cables. When I put new power cables in the system yesterday I might not have put them in right. The 2x 4pin converter was put on the same line. Instead, I think one 4pin should be connected from one line and one from another line.

Could insufficient power cause intermittent problems?

I know red lines usually indicate a failing card but what strikes me as odd is the problem is only occasionally on boot. Running something like furmark should cause the problem but it doesnt.
