Red Hat’s new CEO isn’t wasting any time, on his fourth day on the job he says he is ready to go on the offensive against Microsoft and Oracle and push the company towards billion dollar revenues. Yes, he said “billion.” Isn't that like 8x what the company posted last year?

No longer satisfied just defending a company as he did while working at Delta Air Lines Inc., Whitehurst is ready to go on the offensive against Oracle Corp. and Microsoft Corp. as he builds Raleigh-based Red Hat toward billion-dollar annual revenues.

Consumers: "I hear you talking, but how about you shut up and show me."

MS and Novell: "RedHat what? who?? huh??? whatever."

Ahh yes.. the honeymoon period of a new CEO, when he thinks he's going to pound his chest with "there's gonna be some CHANGES around here" without having any clue of the dynamics of the industry or company he's just come to lead. Just like water seeks its own level, so too does Redhat at its particular low position on the profitability and relevance foodchain in the I.T. industry.

Unfortunately, all the press releases in the world aren't going to make Redcrap better software overnight. This new CEO probably thinks he's cute doing things like mass-mailing the whole company telling them "lets work better/faster/more brilliantly!" Again, the same people that have been producing mediocre products aren't going to suddenly begin producing must-have software overnight.

I give him 6-8 months and then they'll be looking for another CEO, because these kinds of silly overshooting statements are so typically of leadership positions that get fired or resign as fast as they came.

umm, what are you talking about. Redhat makes very good products. Have you ever used Centos(its free, based on Redhat enterprise) or fedora core. You sound like an idiot who has know clue what he is talking about.
I have no clue what the CEO is going to do, but I do know that he fell into a good position to do just what he is saying.

You ain't gotta be so harsh. While I disagree with his second paragraph the first and third were pretty on target imho. I've used RedHat, I found nothing all that bad nor all that great about it. It was certainly not crap, it just did not fit my particular needs.

That new ceo IS talking in the same chest thumping manner that many "here today gone tomorrow" types often do.

RedHat sells a service, one basically identical to what Oracle sells. Oracle sells it cheaper. Having used neither service, I do not know if there is a QOS difference between the two. But the cheaper solution often wins out regardless of quality in this world.

IMHO, RedHat might need to charge less for the service and more for the software if they want to actually have any shot at being a "billion dollars a year in revenue" company. That is in the next 5 years. This year, slim chance, very slim chance of them even nearing that mark without using Enron style math.

Agreed. The man is delusional to a great degree here.
