I modded my pc a couple years ago and at the time if you bought a red lighting device more often than not the results were more redish pink than red. Is this still the case? Should I look at a particular brand?

yes, they are actually red BUT the cathodes are a different shade or at least the one i had. i wouldnt say that it was pinkish but it was just different so i stopped using it (i only use uv cathodes now)

I recall trying a tip I read on a mod forum where you would wrap the "red" cathodes in the red see thru plastic wrapping you use on easter baskets. It worked somewhat but the cathode wasn't bright enough to really pull it off properly :D

I like the red seen in Zalman GT1000 case http://www.sharkacomputers.com/zazbl.html but I don't want to spend the money to get that case. I'd rather buy my own case and mod it out.

So red leds are ok but be wary of the cathodes still? Are you using red uv cathodes?

Personally, I would stay away from the cold cathodes. It looks like a lot of people have used them over the years with reasonable success but adding 2 4" cathodes to my near perfect rig burned out 2 hard drives. The first time I managed to somehow return the drive but I think after the 2nd one I was SOL and out of ~$100 as well. It sucked to think that a cheesy $8 cold cathode could destroy my new hard drive but it was a lesson learned.

Yeah they are actually red now, just make sure of that when you buy online as some vendors may still have the pink ones in.
