Recycle old speakers?

I've just upgraded from my Bose Companion 3 (original series) speakers and don't know what to do with them! I would sell on eBay except that the left out on the subwoofer is not working. I could pay Bose $75 to fix and then sell on eBay but that is not worth the hassle. So what can I do? Are there people that will take old speakers and disassemble them/salvage what they can? Would hate to throw in the trash...

Just sell them on ebay or here (after you get more posts in) or attempt to fix it yourself.

Craigslist.

Plenty of people on the internet still think Bose is a good company.... ;) suckers!

depends where you live, I know in various places in california theres electronic waste recycling centers, some should be free, I know where I live, you have to pay per pound to recycle electronic waste (and you don't want to know how many non-RoHS devices I've left in a dumpster over the years as a result)

or scav them for parts yourself (there should be all sorts of good raw components in there), or try to fix them yourself, depending on what the issue is, or just put them in a closet and see if they end up being needed at some point in the future (maybe you'll need components in the future for some project, or speakers for another computer, who knows)

because your politics are relevant here, lest someone be "cursed" by not thinking like you

Wait, what?

I was telling him where to sell them.... He should get a lot of hits by people who think Bose makes good speakers. Am I wrong in any way?

i like bose from the mid 80's.the new ones are cool to for target practice.:D

Ya never know, someone on ebay might have a working sub and need the satellites.

If they have standard speaker connections you could advertise them as a satellite set. A lot of places actually sell satellite packages since many people want their own sub. I would sell the sub "AS-IS" explaining what's wrong with it and that it's for repair/parts.

the only question I'd have with this, is would the Bose speakers work with something other than their kit amp? just asking because Bose usually loves to release things that are somewhat proprietary compared to the rest of the world

and, do the speakers even have "standard" wiring? (or do they use some non-standards PC speaker "feature" like a TS or cinch plug to the amplifier)

if you can answer yes to the above, then I'd agree with thunder if resale is your goal, list the speakers as a sat pair, and throw the sub out as "for parts"

IIRC, the bose companion "cube" speakers use an RCA connector for each speakers instead of industry standard speaker cable. I guess its to make it easier to connect for some people.. who knows.

OTOH, contrary to what Bose would like us to believe their little cube speakers are not designed to handle high power of even a full range signal so using a different amp could be... interesting.

most of their stuff has a warning against connecting a full range amplifier signal to the cube speakers, or even the floorstanding stuff, its designed to be fed through one of their "EQ" boxes, or paired with one of their subs (which I'm guessing have an xover inside, maybe more, never actually broke one open)

hence my concern for using them raw from an amplifier, even though its probably just a matter of the cube speaker lacking its own HPF (which is probably done as a cost saving measure, who knows)

::Edit
it would appear you're correct, unless Series I is somehow dramatically different

can't find a diagram or picture of the Series I's backend, but I think its probably safe to assume, based on what most PC speakers do, Bose's general "make things simple" approach, and what the Series II is setup like

you could reterminate them, but then theres the issue of "can these take a fullrange signal without being damaged" (and Bose is very likely not even going to bother disclosing this, because its assumed they'll always be run with their amp/sub box)

maybe just sell them as a replacement sat pair, would still probably pull in a number of hits, never know

Yeah, just sell them as a replacement set for the Bose system they come from. List as good till sold which'll keep the auction up for a fair length of time. Price them right and you should have an ok time selling them.

Thanks for all the help. Still not sure what I'll do - seems that I might be able to sell the control pod for $20-$30 judging from ebay completed auctions, then also maybe see if I get any hits on the satellite set.

The back of the Series I does look like the Series II.
