hey,
today i get a call from my girlfriend telling me her laptop is fucked... next thing I know she has reformatted using the built in acer software or something
anyway, is there any way she can recover some of the data that was on there before? (music.. pictures etc..) ?

Thanks

1. Tell her to shut it off and not to use it.

2. GetDataBack may be able to recover some data that was not overwritten during the reinstall.

3. Get your GF a backup solution - an external drive, USB flash drive, cloud backup (i.e. Mozy), WHS - anything that she'll actually use is better than nothing.

The above suggestions/info are accurate. If she had, say, 100GB of data total on the drive and the restoration only used 15GB (typical considering the OEM gunk that most laptops come with), there's a big chance of recovery of some of the original 100GB - meaning ~85GB of it. That's just an example, of course. But the recovery process used by most OEMs just starts an image restore so it doesn't actually do a full format of every sector on the hard drive start to finish - if it did, her data would be gone forever (for all practical intents and purposes).

If she stopped the restoration before it started, chances are even better, but if she allowed the restoration to give her back the "factory condition" then it's going to be interesting to see what might be pulled off the drive based on how much stuff she had on it pre-restoration.

Good luck...
