Recovering Data off Intel ICH10R RAID

Hello all,

I currently have 2 500GB drives configured in Intel RAID on an Asus Z77 motherboard (P8Z77-M Pro). These are running Windows Server

I think the motherboard has the ICH10R southbridge handling the RAID.

Since this is in a production environment, I can't randomly remove the drive to test it. I also realize that it isn't the best way to have set up a RAID (new info points to Windows Server RAID as a better alternative though hardware RAID on a dedicated chip is still the best), but I can't change that at the moment.

While I do have a backup, is there any way I can read the contents of the drive in the event of a motherboard failure?

I'm assuming you have the RAID configured as a RAID-1 array for redundancy?

If that's the case, each drive is normally capable of being read on any SATA controller as a single drive.

I've had several cases of old Dell servers having RAID controllers go bad and I was able to take a single drive
off of the RAID card and connect it to the mobo SATA controller to get the server running again until it could be
repaired properly or replaced.

Yes, I am sorry -- the RAID is indeed configured as RAID1.

Just not sure if drives configured as RAID via the Intel PCH will still be readable normally.

Also, I think I don't think the Z77 is running an ICH10R anymore. I realize those things were on the Core2 775 Boards. Must be something newer/called something else now.
 
You should be able to take a drive configured as a RAID-1 member on a ICH10R
controller and read it on any controller. It may not recognize the array as being
healthy if transferred directly to a different controller though. I would never try that.

The thing to do is get a backup image, build a new array on the new controller
and then restore to the new array.

Also.....

The mirror array can be broken and yet still have one or both readable drives.
In some cases you may have to determine if either of the drives is corrupted.

You can either replace the bad drive and the controller will repair the array, or
else you can save an image from the drive, repair/reconfigure the array manually
and then restore the image to the working array.

It's important to make an image or some other backup before messing with the
RAID config or the controller.

Thanks for this. Sigh of relief although the machine still seems to be humming along fine thus far.

At least I won't have to tear it apart to fix the RAID. Yet.
 
Easy way to grab the info is to put one of those drives in a USB enclosure. I've done that many times, you can even delete the entire drive to raw and then install again and let the array rebuild to it.
