So my friend's laptop hdd is dying and I pull it out and plug it up to my desktop to save whatever data I can.

The hard-drive shows up on my computer with windows 7 warning me that the hard-drive is failing and needs to be back-up. I can access the hard-drive fine and see all the folders (windows, users, etc folders) but each folder is empty?

The hard-drive shows as 139GB free out 140GB. I noticed her user account doesn't even show up in the "user" folder. Only the Administration, Public, and default users do. I do have hidden folders and files view enable.

I ran chkdsk and it did quite a bit. I ran hdd regenerator for 75hours letting it fix a million bad sectors.

HDD tune pro reports:

(05) Reallocated Sector Count:
Current: 134
Worst: 134
Threshold: 140
Data: 528
Status: Failed

(C4) Reallocated Event Count:

Data: 11
Status: Warning

(C5) Current Pending Sector:

Data: 26
Status: Warning

Overall health status: Warning

Anything I can do to jump start this drive and let me access any real data? Unless HP did something and hide all the files somehow. I already took ownership and permission over the "user" folder so I could extract all the My Documents and such data. But yea... as I mention before her user account is as if it doesn't exist. In every folder on the hard-drive it is empty including the windows folder and system32.

On the side note... the recovery partition is fine though. All folders and files are fine too. She had a few pictures and stuff on that partition (no idea why) but they were easily recoverable.

Anyone can help me out a bit?

Try GetDataBack or something similar.

PS: anyone have that link to all the free disaster data recovery tools? I cant find it anymore. :(

I've been meaning to try something called Recuva from the makers of CCleaner. You might give that a try as well.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it.

Hopefully I will have some success.

Well running spinrite (seems like a pretty awesome program) says it will need 927 hours.... the hard-drive is pretty bad.

Getdataback is the same situation.
